1 Day in Rovaniemi for First Timers

Curated by Zoë Smitha Brit with family in Finland.

My childhood dream of visiting Lapland wasn't accomplished until long past the age of believing in Santa Claus, but my first time in Rovaniemi was still just as magical. From reindeer-sleigh rides to visiting the official home of Santa Claus and hunting for the northern lights, the Lappish capital is every bit the winter wonderland I'd imagined.

One day in Rovaniemi isn't nearly enough time to do the region justice, but there's so much to pack in, you'll feel like you stayed longer. To make the most of your time, look for tours that combine must-see Rovaniemi attractions and activities—these are my recommendations.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the Santa Claus Village.

Temperatures drop well below freezing from November through March, so thermal layers and snow gear are a must.

Morning

The Santa Claus village is just a 10-minute drive outside of Rovaniemi, but joining a tour is the best way to maximize your time, especially if you want to take part in outdoor activities along the way. First, get your adrenaline pumping on a thrilling husky sled ride through the snow, then stop at a reindeer farm to enjoy a festive ride on a reindeer-pulled sleigh. Finally, visit the Santa Claus village, where you can snap a selfie with Santa, cross the official Arctic Circle line, and explore the elves' workshops.

Night

If you're visiting from late September through March, a northern lights tour tops the list of the best things to do in Rovaniemi for first timers (summer visitors can take a midnight sun tour instead). Choose a tour with a professional photographer as a guide to learn how to set your camera to capture the dazzling aurora borealis—if you're lucky enough to see the natural phenomenon, at least you can be sure of some good photos to take away. Sightings are never guaranteed, but local guides track the weather and know exactly where to go to give you the best chance.
