1 Day in Marrakech for First Timers

Curated by Lori Zainowho’s been exploring Marrakech for nearly 20 years.

I still remember my first visit to Marrakech. The bustling squares, the scents of cumin and orange blossom wafting through the streets, and the guttural sounds of Darija mixed with French were intoxicating and inviting. I got lost in the souks and probably didn’t barter as much as I should have at the market stands, but that was all part of the fun.

One day in Marrakech isn’t enough to see it all, but it’s a perfect introduction to the city’s maze-like streets and delicious cuisine. If you only have 24 hours in Marrakech, here’s what you should do and see in this North African city.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a walking tour of the winding labyrinth of Marrakech’s historic medina.

Although the days can be mild in winter, the nights can get very chilly, so bring a jacket.

Morning

Wandering around the historic city center is the best way to get a feel for Marrakech. Start in the famous Jemaa el-Fna square, filled with snake charmers, street vendors, and lots of fresh fruit juice stands. Since it’s easy to get lost in the maze-like streets, a guided tour is your best bet for seeing it all, hassle-free. Stop at other landmarks, such as the nearby Koutoubia Mosque and Yves Saint Laurent-restored Majorelle Garden, about a 30-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna square.

Afternoon

Marrakech is full of unique artisan items you’ll want to take home, from its famous black soap and argan oil to carpets, pottery, spices, and leather goods. Bartering or haggling is essential for getting goods at the right price, but it’s not easy to do it on your own. Taking a guided shopping tour of the markets ensures you won’t get lost, that you’ll find the best authentic products, and that you'll get the best price for them. Many of them include round-trip transportation from your hotel.
