3 Days in Lucerne for First Timers

Curated by Margot Biggwhose favorite statue is located in Lucerne.

I have a penchant for visiting—and revisiting—works of art. As a child, my mother would take me to her favorite museum—the National Gallery in London—to say hello to beloved paintings, such as the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan Van Eyck. I’ve taken up the habit myself, and make pilgrimages to favorite places whenever I get the chance just to “say hello” to works of art that move me on a downright spiritual level.

One such work is the Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal), which for me is reason enough to visit Lucerne. Of course, there’s way more to the city than the statue, as you’ll see for yourself with three days in Lucerne.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the Lion Monument.

Expect cool temperatures, even in the summer months.

Day 2

Join a food tour on your second day and get a taste of Swiss cuisine while you learn about local culinary traditions from your guide. Sample everything from Switzerland's most beloved confectionary—chocolate—to sausage, wine, beer, and more.

In the evening, go back in time on a walking tour that focuses on Lucerne's medieval history. Some options are led by guides dressed in medieval costumes, which adds an extra element of fun and authenticity to the experience.

Day 3

On your final day in Lucerne, head up to Mt. Rigi, nicknamed the “queen of the mountains” because of its beauty. You can get there by cogwheel railway via Vitznau or Arth-Goldau, or by cable car from Weggis. Once you're on the top, do a bit of hiking or pamper yourself with a mineral bath soak (or both).

Return to Lucerne before dusk and then head out on an early-evening cruise, ideal for photographers or anyone who wants to take in views of the cityscape as the sun sets.
