Itineraries for Your Trip to La Fortuna
1 Day in La Fortuna for First Timers
I visited La Fortuna on several day trips before spending a few days exploring the Arenal Volcano National Park, and it's one of my favorite places for hiking in nature. Here, you'll find plenty of high-octane activities, such as ziplining and AWD tours through muddy trails. However, some of my favorite things to do are more laid-back, including bird-watching and soaking in hot springs. With one day in La Fortuna, you'll have plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, or you can visit a local farm for a culinary experience. This 1-day La Fortuna itinerary for first timers has a bit of everything to get you started.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a rainforest tour.
Hot, humid, and rainy weather is typical in La Fortuna.
You probably came to La Fortuna to experience the stunning beauty of Arenal Volcano National Park and its surrounding areas. Here, you'll find lots of different adventures, from guided tours of Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park to hot springs dips and swims under the La Fortuna Waterfall. Those who are looking for even more high-adrenaline fun can try canyoneering or white-water rafting. Make the most of your time in La Fortuna and plan an activity that takes advantage of the morning hours.
Costa Rica is renowned for its chocolate and coffee, and you can learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and production of these products on an agricultural tour. Those who want to learn how to cook some of Costa Rica's traditional dishes can find plenty of cooking classes, where you'll make everything from ceviche to empanadas. These hands-on experiences not only deepen your appreciation of Costa Rican flavors but also give you delicious souvenirs in the form of recipes and culinary skills to take home with you.
The variety of animals you can see in La Fortuna is incredible, and booking a nighttime nature tour is a great way to spot some of the animals that sleep during the day and emerge at night. You'll be able to see everything from tiny tree frogs to the elusive sloth illuminated only by a soft, red light. Those looking for even more animal experiences can check out the Butterfly Conservatory or the Proyecto Asis Wildlife Rescue Center.
