Itineraries for Your Trip to Bodrum
3 Days in Bodrum for First Timers
Home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and hemmed in by Aegean beaches, Greek islands, and traditional Turkish villages, Bodrum is one of Turkey’s most captivating port cities. My first visit was on a press trip back in 2011, but I’ve since returned several times, each time discovering more and more of the surrounding region. With three days in Bodrum, there’s time to explore the Bodrum Peninsula, take a boat cruise, and visit the museums and ancient sites. This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors and gives you a taste of everything the city offers.
If you only have time for one thing, make it browsing the stalls at Bodrum Bazaar.
Plan your boat cruise for the hottest day—it’s breezier at sea, and you can cool off with a swim.
Explore Bodrum’s central sights on a walking tour, starting with the ruins of Myndos Gate and Bodrum Amphitheater, followed by the remains of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and a peek at the Bazaar. Next, enjoy views from the hilltop Castle of St. Peter, then visit the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
In the afternoon, visit the traditional village of Etrim, known for its olive oil producers and traditional handicrafts. Learn why Turkey is famous for its carpets as you peek into artisan workshops, visit the local market, and sample regional foods and wines.
The Bodrum Peninsula is known for its forested hills and sandy beaches, peppered with traditional fishing villages, sea caves, and pretty coves. The best way to explore is by boat, so hop aboard for a full-day cruise, stop to swim and snorkel at several different beaches and bays, and enjoy lunch on board.
Back in Bodrum, if you still have energy left for sightseeing, a sunset Segway tour is ideal for admiring the city at its most atmospheric. Zip between the most scenic viewpoints, then head to Bar Street (Cumhuriyet Caddesi) or Bodrum Marina to soak up the nightlife.
If you only have time for one day trip from Bodrum, make it the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the Meditteranean's largest, impressively preserved Roman cities. It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Bodrum; visit with a guide who can provide context to sites, including the Temple of Hadrian, the Celsus Library, and the House of the Virgin Mary.
After a busy three days, relax and unwind at a traditional Turkish bath. Enjoy an indulgent spa treatment and a cultural experience by opting for a package with a typical hammam, foam massage and scrub, and a rejuvenating oil massage.
