Kas is a laid-back town on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast that combines vibrant bars and restaurants with easy access to beaches and ancient ruins. There are many things to do in Kas, as it is a popular spot for scuba diving, sea kayaking, and hiking. Lycian tombs and an ancient Hellenistic theater are within the town, and the nearby Kaputas Beach is a popular place for swimming. Boats depart regularly to the nearby island of Kekova, where it is possible to see sunken ruins.
The best time to visit Kas is during the warmest months, from May through October. The weather is sweltering and humid in July and August, but the sea is comfortable, and it’s a good time to go scuba diving. The weather will still be warm in May–June and September–October. The cooler months are good times to take advantage of the hiking routes in the area.
The center of Kas is compact and can be easily navigated by foot, though some of the hills in town are pretty steep. Taxis are readily available and can take you to the peninsula or farther afield. Water taxis and other boats depart regularly from the port. There are buses and minibusses that connect Kas to the nearby cities and towns in the area.
The Lycian Way cuts through Kas, and it is possible to do day hikes along the well-maintained waymarked route in either direction. The westward direction will take you into the mountains, while the eastward direction will take you to the beaches of Liman Agzi. Quiet public beaches on Kas’s Cukurbag Peninsula are easily accessible by taxi.
