1 Day in Aruba for First Timers

Curated by Aimee Della Bittaa travel writer lucky enough to explore Aruba’s coast and culture.

The first time I visited Aruba, I was hooked. The turquoise water, warm breeze, and easy rhythm of the island made it feel like somewhere I could return to often. Nearly two decades later, that feeling hasn’t changed. Aruba may be small, but it’s full of color, flavor, and moments that stay with you long after you’ve left. Even with just one day in Aruba, you can experience what makes it so special. Start with a morning exploring the stunning landscapes and surfside beach, stray off the beaten path in the afternoon, and end the day watching the sunset over the Caribbean Sea. It’s a simple, satisfying way to take in the best of this island in a short stay.

Aruba stays sunny and breezy year-round, with little rain—pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and light layers to stay protected from the sun and trade winds.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a sunset cruise along Aruba’s spectacular coastline.

Morning

Get out early to make the most of your day in Aruba. Begin with a sunrise horseback ride along the island’s north coast, where desert trails open onto sweeping sea views near Malmok Beach and Arashi Beach. You’ll pass cactus-covered hills and quiet coves—places most visitors may miss on a short visit. After the ride, head toward Palm Beach for breakfast. Try Eduardo’s Beach Shack for smoothie bowls or Linda’s Dutch Pancakes for something heartier. Both are local favorites and perfect for refueling before diving into a full day of exploring.

Afternoon

Explore a different side of Aruba this afternoon with an off-road UTV adventure along the island’s rugged east coast. You’ll cross volcanic rock formations and beaches such as Blackstone and Andicuri before stopping to swim at the Cave Pool and visit the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins. You’ll also pass by the California Lighthouse and learn the full story behind the century-old landmark. It all wraps up with a relaxing stop at Arashi Beach before heading back to your hotel to unwind.

Night

As the day winds down, sail off into the golden hour aboard a relaxing sunset catamaran cruise along the island’s Caribbean coast. Drift past the coastline, sip tropical drinks, and enjoy light bites as the sun sets. After departing the ship, head to Palm Beach’s waterfront district for dinner and evening vibes—lots of restaurants, bars, and live music spots come alive after dark. For a more local feel, stroll through the capital city of Oranjestad’s downtown strip, where you’ll find boutique shops, street performers, and cozy cafes to celebrate your full-day trip on the island.
