A great trip to see the country north of Veracruz. El Tajin was amazing. Papantla was also interesting, though not much time was spent there. The drive was pretty long and it was hot. But it was totally worth it. Just make sure to bring enough water. Rafael was a great guide. He knew his stuff and was enthusiastic in sharing. If you are curious he can answer questions about many aspects of the country. I don’t know how he stayed awake for the return drive. Kudos to him.

Fun and informative tour
The tour to el tajin was fantastic. Highly recommended for any travelers who want to see an archaeological site that isn’t overtly commercialized. The ruins are well preserved and you get to learn a lot of history that most foreign tourists wouldn’t know about. The tour has a driver/tour guide for the road trip and also a historical specialist guide at el tajin. The historian guide at el tajin (think his name is Jose but not 100% sure) is extremely knowledgeable and is clearly very passionate about the project here. He went into a lot of details far beyond our expectations. Also, his English is very good so English speakers can feel confident asking the most difficult questions. Our driver/guide is Rafael. He is extremely friendly and we had a great trip together. Note that the driver/guide for this company generally Spanish speaking only but this shouldn’t deter non-Spanish speaking folks from taking the tour. We don’t speak a single sentence of Spanish but had no trouble communicating with Rafael via using translation app. Rafael is very patient and accommodating so everything went smoothly. Overall, I would highly recommend this tour.

Papantla
  • Art lovers won’t want to miss unassuming Papantla, which is home to several large-scale Teodoro Cano García murals.

  • Don’t forget to catch a "Danza de los Voladores" ("Dance of the Flyers") performance—the dance is strongly connected to Totonac culture in Papantla.

  • Papantla is also known for its vanilla, so make sure to sample some of the local produce during your visit.

  • Narrow sidewalks and steep curbs may make Papantla tricky to navigate for wheelchair users.
