This pleasant hike of moderate difficulty will take you up to the top of the most popular mountain in the Cycladic island cluster: Mount Zas! Once you reach the peak, there are many things to be proud of! Not only will you be at the highest point in the Cyclades, but you’ll have hiked to the summit of the mountain where Zeus, Father and King of the Olympian Gods, was raised. The trail you’ll be following is exactly the same trail people have been following to the top of the mountain since ancient times. The vast blue of the Aegean Sea will accompany you along the way, while the view of the neighboring Cycladic islands is breathtaking. When you’re at the top, the 360 degree view is worthy of the Gods! Once you reach the top, you’ll spend some time taking photos and having a delicious traditional treat. We start the tour by riding towards Glinado village and then Vivlos village where we admire the windmills and the mesmerizing views of the Aegean archipelago. We then descend towards the ocean, passing from beautiful countryside landscapes to arrive at Plaka area with the crystal clear water and the golden sand beaches. We ride along the coast and depending on the wind, if any, your guide will give you a few options to choose on which beach is more suitable for the swim of the day. We’ll embark on a scenic drive of about 30-40 minutes into the heart of the island. While traversing half of Naxos, you will immerse yourselves in some of the most breathtaking views this magical place has to offer. As we ascend, the horizon opens up in both directions, offering a rare and awe-inspiring sight of both the eastern and western coasts of Naxos. At this elevated vantage point, a secluded village comes into view—a serene oasis surrounded by lush, untouched nature. We’ll set off on a gentle hiking trail that leads to a hidden 20-meter waterfall, where you can unwind next to a serene pool surrounded by nature. The waterfall’s flow varies according to seasonal conditions. After soaking in the tranquility, we’ll have the option to visit a nearby village where a delightful traditional lunch awaits. Leave Naxos for a lazy day at sea, cruising by contemporary catamaran. With the boat work, navigation, and lunch prep left to the crew, your time is your own to enjoy as you wish. On your hike we will see the mountain fountains, the cave of Zas, which according to legend is the place where the young Zeus found refuge to avoid the vengeful wrath of Kronos. From the top of Zas we will enjoy the panoramic view that under good weather conditions encompasses the entire southern Aegean, from Crete to the Asia Minor coasts. We suggest 2 hiking options based on your personal experience. We have the easy and medium level options. In the easy option, the hike will start from the old church of Agia Marina and we will end up at the summit of Za. The duration of the route is approximately 3 hours. The 2nd and medium difficulty option starts from the fountain of Aries, we meet the Za cave and continue to the summit and then return to Agia Marina. The duration of the route is approximately 3 1/2 hours. The guide is a certified and local guide, and lives in Filoti which is located below the Za mountain. He has extensive experience of the area and historical knowledge.
