Entry to Champagne Reef costs approximately US$2 per person for the site use fee at Champagne Beach, when the warden is present. You can also rent snorkeling gear on-site for US$5. However, tours will make the whole experience much easier—and get you more places and farther offshore—and those start around US$25.

Champagne Reef is a cool underwater volcanic site off Dominica's southwest coast. Along the reef, geothermal springs release streams of warm bubbles—looking like the bubbles in champagne—throughout the seabed. It’s renowned for fabulous snorkeling and diving, as the shallow reef combines volcanic activity with coral gardens, tropical marine life, and warm Caribbean waters.

The main attraction at Champagne Reef is the thousands of warm volcanic bubbles rising continuously from cracks in the rocky seafloor. But snorkelers and divers will also encounter colorful coral, sponges, sea fans, and tropical fish such as angelfish and parrotfish. Seahorses, octopuses, eels, and occasional sea turtles explore the diverse reef, too.

Tours aren't required at Champagne Reef, no—you can visit independently by driving to the site, paying the entrance fee, renting gear on-site, and snorkeling on your own. However, guided tours provide equipment, local expertise, safety supervision, transportation, and insider knowledge (and maybe a boat!) to get you to the top spots, ultimately providing the best underwater experience.

Champagne Reef is excellent for snorkeling. Not only do the warm geothermal vents create bubbles, but it also means comfortable swimming conditions year-round, enhancing the snorkeling experience—and the marine life is colorful and exquisite. However, do note that the beach is rocky, and getting in the water from shore can be tricky.
