Perched on the clifftops of El Tajo Gorge, Ronda boasts one of Spain’s most dramatic landscapes and a rich history evident through ancient rock paintings, towering stone bridges, and 14th-century ruins. Today, this pueblo blanco (white town) is an ideal mountain getaway or a day-trip destination for travelers exploring Andalucia, thanks to its dramatic cliffs, local wineries, and rustic charm.

Built between 1528 and 1782, after Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand expelled the Moors from the Iberian Peninsula, Málaga Cathedral (Catedral de la Encarnación de Málaga) is one of the city’s top historic landmarks. Designed by architect Diego de Siloé, the cathedral is a unique combination of Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque styles.

Wedged between two branches of the Guadalquivir River just across the Isabel II Bridge from central Seville, vibrant Triana is often described as the city’s heart and soul. Originally home to Roma gypsy families, its colorful reputation is built on its love for flamenco and tapas—two top visitor draws.

Several bridges traverse the Guadalquivir River as it weaves through Cordoba, but one really stands out: the Roman Bridge (Puente Romano). Anchored by Calahorra Tower to the south and Puerta del Puente to the north, this bridge was originally built in the 1st century BC. Highlights of the structure include the statue of San Rafael at its mid-point.

Stroll cobblestone streets, stop for tapas, and marvel at centuries-old architecture in Seville's Historic Center (Centro Historico de Sevilla). This destination may be best known for its trio of UNESCO World Heritage Sites—the Cathedral, Alcázar, and the Archivo de Indias—making it a prime destination to uncover Spanish history.

Guarding the southwestern corner of Cordoba’s Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs (Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos) is among the city’s most memorable monuments. The Moorish-style fortress has a history dating back to Roman and Visigoth times, before it was transformed into a Christian palace by Alfonso XI in the 13th century.

The Royal Tobacco Factory (Real Fábrica de Tabacos) offers a glimpse into Seville’s once booming tobacco industry—although what was once the largest industrial building in Europe is now a university building. Many visit in homage to Bizet’s operaCarmen; it’s in this former factory that the namesake heroine rolls cigars on her thighs.

The Sacromonte district of Granada is the seat of the thriving Gitano gypsy community that settled in hillside caves during the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, Sacromonte is also the epicenter of Granada’s zambra flamenco scene, with performances staged at thee tablaos along Camino del Sacromonte.

Commonly referred to as the Triana Bridge, the Puente de Isabel II—completed under Queen Isabel II’s reign—crosses the Guadalquivir River, connecting Seville and its old quarter to Triana, which is wedged between two branches of the river. The area is notable for its historically eclectic residents, from sailors and bullfighters to potters and flamenco dancers.

The Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) is a major feat of 18th-century engineering uniting Ronda’s old and new towns over El Tajo Gorge, the sheer limestone ravine that descends 390 feet (120 meters) to the craggy bed of the Guadalevín River. Spanish architect José Martín de Aldehuela designed the bridge, constructed between 1759 and 1793.

The Albaicín (also spelled Albayzín or Albaycín) is Granada's old Muslim quarter, and its steep twisting streets underscore a medieval past. Founded in 1228 by the Moors, the neighborhood is dotted with Baroque churches inside old mosques and traditionalcarmenes (villas). Albaicín is also known for having stellar views of the Alhambra.

Situated side by side, the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel of Granada (Capilla Real) together make an impressive monument to the power of Christian monarchs in Andalucia. The cavernous cathedral houses paintings by Ribera and El Greco; the remains of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragón are interred within the chapel’s shrine.

Situated in a renovated 18th century building, the Flamenco Dance Museum (Museo del Baile Flamenco) is one of Seville’s most important cultural touchstones. Here, you can attend a live flamenco performance and also learn about the history of the dance form at an interactive museum—an immersive experience you won’t find at other venues.

The oldest monument in Málaga, the Roman Theatre (Teatro Romano de Málaga) was built in the first Roman emperor Augustus’ reign. The amphitheater was unearthed as part of a civic building project in the 1950s and has since been excavated and restored.

The biggest draw of Granada’s Albaycin quarter (the old Moorish quarter) is the hilltop Mirador de San Nicolás, a small plaza that lies in front of San Nicolás Church. This lookout point offers panoramic views spanning the city center, the distant Sierra Nevada Mountains, Rio Darro canyon and, most famously, the grand Alhambra palace.

One of the most impressive landmarks in Seville, the Palace of San Telmo has played various roles in civic life since it was built in 1682. Today the rusty-red and golden-yellow building welcomes lawmakers to the seat of the Andalusian government, but you can still arrange for a tour inside to see the rich and grand history of this former university and palace.

Seville's bullring—or the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla—is one of the oldest in Spain. It was here that the corrida, or bullfight, moved from a rectangular to an oval arena and many of the cherished theatrical traditions of the matador evolved. Completed in the late 18th century, the bullring is a yellow-and-white baroque beauty and a must-see for architecture buffs; tours cover the bullring plus the exhibition hall, stables, and Capilla de los Toreros (“Bullfighters’ Chapel”).

Once considered an important commercial city and port in Europe, Seville built this Renaissance-style building—now called the General Archive of the Indies (Archivo General de Indias)—to serve as a merchant exchange. The space now houses documents related to Spain’s overseas possessions between the 15th and 19th centuries—which comprises more than 6 miles (10 kilometers) of shelving with over 43,000 volumes and 80 million pages.

A public square situated in the center of Málaga, Plaza de la Merced has been a functional part of the city since the Roman Empire. It is best known as being one of the largest plazas in Málaga as well as being located steps away from famed artist Pablo Picasso’s childhood home.

Perched high up on Mont Gibralfaro, Castillo de Gibralfaro offers commanding views of the city of Malaga and the Mediterranean Sea. Originally built by the Moors in the 10th century, the castle is one of Malaga’s best-known sights and is featured on the city’s flag.

Granada's Paseo de los Tristes is a riverside walkway along the canyon separating the Alhambra from the Albaicín neighborhood. Paseo de los Tristes once served as the route for funeral processions—hence its name, which means "Promenade of the Sad." Today restaurant terraces tempt passersby with refreshment and sweeping Alhambra views.

Sprawled across a mountain slope some 1,475 feet (450 meters) above the Mediterranean Sea, the whitewashed village of Mijas Pueblo still looks much the same as it would have centuries ago. While the historic center retains its old-fashioned air, the Mijas Costa coastal area is dotted with golf courses and modern hotels.

Museo Picasso Málaga, situated in the city of the master’s birth, showcases a collection of more than 200 pieces donated to the museum by Picasso’s family. While the Blue and Rose periods are missing, the collection highlights the artist’s personal side, with works he painted for his family or kept for himself.

Plaza Nueva has long been at the center of local life in Granada, and its location at the foot of the Alhambra palace means many tourists will pass through it. Laid out in the early Christian era, the square was built over the Darro River and once served as an arena for sporting tournaments and bullfights, as well as public executions.

The old Moorish town of Ronda teeters precariously atop the El Tajo Gorge, which historically served as a daunting obstacle for approaching enemies. Water from the Guadalevín River and melting snow flowing down from the Sierra de las Nieves eroded the gorge, and Ronda is one of the few towns in the world to be split in two by a ravine such as this.

The heart of Málaga is the Plaza de la Constitución, a historic and vibrant public square. Dating back to the 15th century, this location is still a city hub; lined with bustling shops and cafés, this pedestrian-friendly area is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and curious explorers.

North of Seville lies one of Andalusia’s most important historical sites: the ruins of Itálica near the Guadalquivir River. Founded in 206 BC, Itálica was the first and largest Roman settlement in southern Spain. The site, which can be visited on a guided tour, includes mosaics, an amphitheater, and the remains of grand villas and city streets.

Atarazanas Market (also known as Mercado Central de Ataranzanas) is a Málaga landmark that served as a shipyard, warehouse, and barracks before becoming the city’s leading food market. The Moorish-influenced building has been refurbished, and it’s once more a warren of stalls set amid delicate wrought ironwork below a domed stained-glass window.

One of Andalucia’s cleanest urban beaches, the man-made Malagueta Beach (Playa de la Malagueta) sweeps along the coastline for 0.7 miles (1.2 kilometers) and is backed by palm trees, high-rise hotels, and luxurious apartments. Take a dip in the calm surf, relax beneath a parasol, and enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere.

Palm trees and fascinating architecture surround one of Seville’s most beautiful open-air plazas, Plaza de America. This Spanish square is a popular place for a leisurely stroll and people-watching from a bench. It is often included in walking tours focused on top city landmarks.
