I was so impressed with the entire Chameleon experience. The communication beforehand, personal care and attention during, accommodations, guiding and information throughout, overall flexibility, and responsible tourism practices were outstanding. Our guide, Gideon, was fantastic, giving us insightful information, being clear on expectations and agendas, and providing an authentic and realistic view of the wonderful country of Namibia. (Special shout out for changing FOUR tyres throughout the journey - two on the side of the road - without stress.) Many tour operators around the world do not consider the impact of tourism on the communities and environment, and I feel that Chameleon does and has gone out of their way to put systems in place which work toward sustainable tourism practices. Thank you!!!

Not impressed with the tour company

I booked the 4 day tour Thurs to Sun. Before making the booking, I made sure that it was not going to be a problem returning to the airport to catch my flight out of Windhoek at 2:30 pm. When I checked into the office that morning. They told me there was an issue with getting me back in time for my flight so I would have to pay for a private transfer at 6 am Sunday morning and the cost was 5500 NAD. I was shocked that they made the error and expected me to cover that cost while pulling me out early and losing the last day's activity. but the manager told me they will cover that cost and just enjoy the tour. So day 1 begins. The driver said it was just a transfer to Swakopmund. He said that when I arrive I can join a tour to see Walvis Bay and sand board down the dunes. After I agreed to joining the tour for the next day, then he told me that i didn't need to go to Walvis Bay that day because i will see it tomorrow. He never told me I was supposed to see it with him along with a few other stops. I felt he was deceitful in selling that tour so he didn't have to do it. Then I get a message asking me if I would prefer to leave Sat afternoon at 1 pm instead of Sunday morning at 6 am. There was another person in the group leaving at that time, so I agreed to save them from having another driver for myself. They said they will put me in a hotel for Sat night. So I agreed. Day 2 started with the added tour that I paid for. Then my actual tour guide drove us to Solitaire and the camp in Sossusvlei. We went to see the canyon that evening before dinner. Day 3 was an early start to see Deadvlei. We didn't get a chance to climb Big Daddy because we were short on time to make the return trip to windhoek. I didn't get a chance to see the cheetahs, so there were a few things missed on my 4 day tour which basically became 1 and half day tour. The transfer was on a regular shuttle van. Did not get the personal driver I thought I was sharing with the other person. Not very impressed!

We fully acknowledge that an error was made regarding the return time to Windhoek in relation to your scheduled flight. Unfortunately, we only became aware of the timing conflict once we received your flight details on the morning of departure. Nevertheless, it was our responsibility to identify and resolve this earlier, and for that I am genuinely sorry. From the moment the issue was identified, we ensured that a private transfer was made available to you at no cost, as previously communicated. This option remained available throughout, and we were happy to cover the expense entirely. You later opted for the shared transfer solution when an alternative departure time became possible, and we appreciate your flexibility in assisting us with logistics for the rest of the group. I would also like to apologise for the guiding concerns you mentioned, specifically the missed visit to Walvis Bay. This is not the standard of service or communication we expect from our team. We have addressed this matter directly, and additional training has already been implemented to ensure this does not happen again. Regarding the amended arrangements for Saturday, the intention was to provide a more comfortable option rather than a very early morning departure. However, I completely understand your disappointment that parts of the itinerary were shortened as a result, and I am sorry that you were unable to experience certain activities you were looking forward to. At Chameleon Safaris, we take full responsibility for the mistakes that occurred during your booking process. At the same time, we kindly ask all travellers joining our scheduled departures to carefully read through the full itinerary included in their booking confirmation. We also strongly encourage guests to share their flight information with us as soon as it becomes available. Very rushed tour of great landscapes

I find it somewhat difficult to review this tour because the day in the red dunes was definitely one of the best days of my life. However, overall, I was left with a sad pang of regret at what could have been if I had dared to do the tour by myself rather than with a group. Overall, the tour felt very, very rushed. We *had* to be in Walvis Bay at 1pm. The tour we booked there to Sandwhich harbor was fun, though very expensive and once again rushed because we *had* to be in Swakopmund early for a restaurant booking. I didn’t get 5 min to look at the flamingos I had so wanted to see; it was all drive-by-photography and there was no time in the dunes to look at any lizards or chameleons. Me and some other girls at least walked down the pier in Swakopmund to view the sunset before joining the rest of the group at the restaurant. Admittedly, it was a very nice restaurant, but come on - we could have eaten in the dark after taking the last sunlight to actually explore the town. The next morning, it was categorically ruled out to leave an hour later; we *had* to leave by 11:20. I can understand the driver not wanting to get into trouble with his boss but customer satisfaction should be considered. Half the group wanted to see the seals, yet Chameleon couldn’t get a tour operator to offer an earlier departure/return nor wait a mere 40min longer to leave Swakopmund. Asked, what we could do if we didn’t want to moto-cross or sandboard (with no chance of a shower afterwards as checkout was 10am), the guide answered „sleep“. Sleep - on an >800€ tour!! Well, we walked around town but didn’t have enough time to even go on the tower before having to buy water supplies. The rest of the day was just endless driving through the desert with very brief photo stops. Since we were sitting at the front, I couldn’t see over the driver’s box at all and my side window collapsed inward at some point and needed to be repaired at Solitaire. The desert camp was nice but outside the national park gate, meaning we would not get the sunrise in the dunes that had been advertised. The program clearly states „sunrise at the dunes is the name of the game“ - well, if we had known, this was the requirement, we would have opted to sleep in a tent at the other camp despite the cold. As it was, we only entered the dunes once the tent campers were having their breakfast on dune 45. Sunrise was long over by then. I will say that Deadvlei was one of the most amazing places I have ever been to. But for some reason, the guide, who clearly was over tourists and not at all into the tour, wanted to be back at the camp as soon as possible. He basically wanted everyone out of Deadvlei by 11am. Thus, I decided I would not have enough time to climb Big Daddy and actually spend time in the valley and stayed behind. Well, the time limit was completely utopic; the climbers only returned from Big Daddy after 12 but not knowing that beforehand, I didn’t even dare to take the short-cut up the steep dune in Deadvlei (for which there would have been more than enough time). The tour group was very mixed with half the people under 35 and some being over retirement age. The elders had been waiting for the youngsters so long that they wanted lunch and since it was already getting late, we skipped the Big Mama dune climb altogether. At least, we did go up Dune 45, though by then it was very hot and not as nice-looking as it would have been at sunrise. Standing on top of a dune‘s edge is an amazing experience and I was exhilarated - though also very miffed that I only got to climb that one dune. Sesriem canyon was nice as well, however, even if very rushed again (and we spotted a poisonous snake). After much probing, the guide had, with obvious annoyance, arranged a booking for a scenic flight for 4 people in our group, which was absolutely stunning and unforgettable and totally worth the money (I also think it ended up being better from Sossusvlei than from Swakopmund where we originally wanted to fly from). I did feel for the guide somewhat, because he also had to take care of breakfast and dinner preparations but I still think his attitude is not very customer-friendly - he told those who couldn’t afford the flight and were asking about alternative activities that they „could enjoy the Wi-Fi“!! (Sundowners at the dunes is also impossible if your accommodation is outside the park gate). The last day was just a half day driving back to Windhoek. We stopped at Solitaire again to see some rescued cheetahs, which were cute but it was also sad…I’m glad, they were rescued but they’re locked up in a smallish enclosure and can’t ever be released into the wild… The guide eventually did arrange a transfer for us to the next lodge but I will never understand why Chameleon Safaris couldn’t do that from the beginning. When we told them where we were staying, they just said that it was outside the city so we couldn’t be dropped there; they didn’t offer an alternative… Overall, we were sad to leave the other travelers, just as we had bonded a little but regarding the tour provider, we had felt more like a burden than valued guests throughout the trip. Again, I can kind of sympathize with the guide‘s very long days - being driver, guide and cook all at once is probably too much work for a single person. But for the money we spent, I would have much rather arranged the transfers and accommodations myself and actually soaked up everything I came there to see rather than rushing on and on and feeling like I will need to return to really get to experience these amazing destinations properly.

A great safari!

Our guide, Daniel did a great job showing us around Sossusvlei and answering questions about the Namib Desert and the features within. The meals he cooked were delicious as well. Kennedy also did a fantastic job for the portion of the trip between Windhoek and Swakopmund. A trip to remember!
