Warning- Motema Tours of Namibia is a Dangerous and Scandalous tour company. WARNING-DO NOT BOOK with them! Firstly, I will clarify that this review has nothing to do with our amazing tour guide Denzel, who treated us with the utmost respect, sincerity, and professionalism.
I booked a 3-day private tour with Motema over 5 months ago on Viator. Everything was fine at first, but after driving 3 hours into the barren desert, the car began to fail with engine problems. It finally died when we were over 200 km in the abyss of the Namib desert resulting in a 3 hour-wait for roadside assistance. I can’t begin to imagine what would have happened to us had we not had any phone reception when we were further in to the desert. I later found out from other reputable Namibian tour companies that this is a common problem with Motema because they “cut corners” when maintaining their vehicles in an attempt to save cost. The car kept having issues during the entire tour, but we were lucky enough to find kind people along the way who helped us jump start the battery to get through the next couple of days.
My next complaint against Motema is that they informed me only 2 days before I flew in to Namibia that I must pay an additional $400 for an “upgraded accommodation arrangement”. But they later walked back on their reasoning and said it was an extra charge for my toddler son. I tried to scramble for other tour companies at that point, but being that it’s high season, all other tour companies were fully booked. They left me no choice but to agree to the extra charges because my son and I specifically flew in (from the U.S.) for this guided tour. Upon check-in at our accommodation, I learned that my son was not included in my reservation. What a scam!
When I argued about the extra charges, the owner of Motema used disrespectful language, accusing me of being “illiterate” and a “big scam”.
There are many other tour companies in Namibia with better reputations. Please consider this review when making a choice.

We strongly regret having accepted this booking and feel it is important to clarify the misleading and defamatory claims made in this review.
Firstly, this client falsely stated she was traveling alone, only for us to find out later that she was traveling with a child. Despite this, we went out of our way to accommodate her and her child by organizing additional arrangements and asking for a reasonable supplement to cover the extra costs. She refused to pay until we were forced to insist, at which point she became aggressive and disrespectful. We have all proof about it to cover ourselves.
Secondly, she made an error in her own booking dates and accused us of making the mistake. We provided clear proof of her error, at which point her tone became insulting and inappropriate.
Regarding the vehicle: the car was fully serviced and had undergone mechanical checks before departure. Unfortunately, even new or well-maintained vehicles can face unforeseen issues such as a battery failing due to lights being left on by mistake. We have never "cut corners" and take our maintenance standards extremely seriously. Proof she is the only one reporting about a such on our reviews.
Throughout this experience, the client was aggressive, uncooperative, and began using threats and blackmail, attempting to damage our reputation. We have full documentation and evidence of every interaction.

This experience has served as a reminder that not every client approaches the journey in good faith. We hope no other operator has to endure what we did in this situation.

My husband and I had a wonderful 3 day trip March 2-4, 2024 with Motema Tours. We were picked up at our hotel in Windhoek and the first day was spent driving out to the Namib Desert. Rodrig was a fantastic guide. We stopped at Spreetshoogte Pass and the town of Solitaire, and spent the night at Elegant Desert Lodge, which was a wonderful hotel. Day 2 was jam packed with going to Namib-Naukluft Park where the big red sand dunes are. Pictures can't convey the size and beauty of the desert. We climbed Dune 45 and visited Deadviel, Sossuslvlei, and Sesriem Canyon. We took an optional plane flight over the desert which was very worthwhile. The third day was spent driving back to Windhoek and admiring the beautiful scenery of the Naukluft mountains, as well as seeing zebras, a hyena, meerkats, ostriches, and other animals. This is a great private tour if you only have a few days to see the sand dunes.

Amazing diverse landscape with a knowledgeable and professional guide made this a memorable tour. Highlight was seeing a pride of 11 lions in Etosha nature reserve. From the jaw dropping landscape to enthralling dune 4x4 racing to the luxurious African sundowners eating great food outside under the stars.
