Ash was such a great guide and a modest (though very good) singer. The caves were very impressive and Ash’s stories were very funny. The glow worms were amazing and the boat ride was so serene. We had a lot of fun. A great day.

Itinerary

Pick a tour departure time to suit your schedule and begin your visit at the Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre. Prepare to experience the magic of this unexpected subterranean adventure.

Start your glowworm experience by exploring the giant cave complex on foot, stopping to visit its "Cathedral Cave," a site renowned for its unique acoustics and striking cave features. Then step aboard your boat to continue your adventure.

Silently cruise through the Glowworm Grotto, marveling at the star-like constellation of bioluminescent insects that seem to twinkle like an eerie blue version of the nighttime sky. Your guide will provide details about the insects themselves, known by their scientific name of Arachnocampa luminosa, and share insights into the geologic and historical background of the cave complex.

Leave the caves after your 45-minute underground journey, still marveling at the mysterious beauty of these surprising insects.

Great experience

Tara_B, May 2026
They were so accommodating when I was running late, the tour was stunning - only negative was other tourists speaking when asked to be quiet but the guides did repeatedly ask them to stop.

The waitomo caves are...

Meenakshi_M, May 2026
The waitomo caves are nice, although I would maybe try somewhere closer to Rotorua next time. The drive was a bit far.

Optional

Melissa_R, May 2026
The boat ride where you really see the glowworms was max 5-10 minutes. Also you were not allowed to take pictures and they take a picture infront of a green screen and Photoshop you into an unrealistic picture of the cave and charge you 25$ if you want it, wouldn't recommend. There is a bushwalk nearby which is amazing and you also walk through a cave ☺️

Fun stories, cool space

Eric_R, May 2026
Steven has probably led this tour thousands of times but somehow he made our group feel special. Fun stories in a cool space.

Last Tour of the Day

Donna_L, May 2026
I tried booking this through a 3rd party but they could not get a reservation at the time. I checked a few days later through Viator and was able to reserve. I would recommend using Viator even if it does cost a little more (I had a coupon for the 3rd party). There is peace of mind going through a major company like Viator. The guided tour itself was great. We had Cohen as our guide and he made us laugh and gave us great insight. The best part was that because we were the last tour of the day, we were not rushed. He also was able to do something near the end which made the Glowworms light intense which was awesome - he said he could only do this as the last tour whether that was true or not I could not say.

world's best TOUR GUIDE

Tobias_N, May 2026
world's best TOUR GUIDE. He was so funny, informative and talked about important and deep messages. He was fantastic. Also the tour was really nice, the caves and glowworms are stunning.

Amazing experience

Adish_T, May 2026
We reached a little early. We were traveling from Paihia to Rotorua and had booked this excursion in advance, and grossly miscalculated. But they were very generous with the help and adjusted us in another time slot. There were no questions about our problems, they just got into action once they got to know. The excursion was great as well. The staff at Waitomo explained the caves and it's creation and history in great details and actually helped my parents a lot who don't understand English that well.

This was a fun and easy...

Jacqueline_O, May 2026
This was a fun and easy way to see glow worms. In addition to the glow worms, the cave was really interesting. We enjoyed our experience overall.

Unique & fascinating experience not to be missed.

Anthony_R, May 2026
It was very well organised & our guide was very informative. Not an overly large group which was great. Its an experience like no other…absolutely fascinating “other worldly” experience & well worth doing. Silence & good balance/eye sight required but it was in no way difficult. There were older people in our group & all coped well. The boatride through a section of the cave at the end was breathtaking.

Amazing and serene. Excellent.

I had a very wonderful experience in the cave. The tour guide was very friendly and helpful. There was ample parking.

Magical Caves, Slightly Overhyped Glowworms

Louisa_R, Apr 2026
The caves were easily one of the most unique experiences we’ve had so far—full of incredible history and natural beauty. The glowworms aren’t quite as dense as the marketing images suggest, but the experience is still stunning and well worth the drive from Auckland.

Excellent tour

Jackie_S, Apr 2026
It was well organised and Tummy our tour guide was brilliant.. the caves were great and the glowworms amazing to see!! Great day out for all ages.

Great experience with kids.

Reuben_N, Apr 2026
Great and Amazing for a 4 year old. And even for me. i feel it was like staring at the cosmos in a cave. Definitely a worthwhile visit

Jacob

Janice_W, Apr 2026
Jacob was fun. He spun some good yarns. Tried to get groups together in the boat when he could. Very polite.

Amazing but maybe just a little overhyped

Dhruva_G, Apr 2026
Alright so it’s definitely a fun experience but it’s quite overhyped. The glow worms don’t quite look like what’s in the promotional pictures and the brochures. But it’s still quite a sight to see. Once you’re actually in the boat, you’re left wishing that the experience lasted a little longer. But all things said and done, I’d still recommend it if you’re an hour’s drive from Waitomo and haven’t seen the glow worms at all. Our guide was very knowledgeable, funny and friendly which made the experience more worthwhile!

Not worth it.

Delaney_P, Apr 2026
Beautiful, but definitely not worth it. Very expensive (around $165 for two people) for what it is, and even though it is a 45 minute tour, it is just standing (or sitting) in one of 3 rooms (2 of which have no gloworms). The boat tour (10 minutes) is the best part, and very nice, but it is just rowing around in circles in the same small room. Definitely better options for cheaper in the area. It is no wonder why they forbid you from taking photos... The gift shop was not great - gloworm keychains for $41.90 is a bit excessive. The tour guide, was great though!

Very cool experience but...

Samantha_R, Apr 2026
Very cool experience but pricey for what you actually get. Would prefer a longer or more involved tour.

Not worth the drive

Nicolette_M, Apr 2026
The caves are beautiful but you can’t take any photos and it was really over sold on how great it was considering

Exceeded expectations

Joanne_L, Apr 2026
One of the best experiences! I had no expectations just that my son has always wanted to see a cave since he was 2. Our tour guide was very friendly and funny, the history was very interesting. I would go back again. I left feeling cleansed and calm ☺️

Unique trip

Dean_B, Apr 2026
Well organised trip worth seeing a unique feature of your visiting the area. Make sure you book in advance people were turning up and there was no availability

Corrina_C, Apr 2026
First of all, our guide was informative and beautiful [Cup of Tea]. Besides that, we drove for 2 hrs early in the morning to get there, my son was so excited. Arrived at tour desk, staff seemed bored and disinterested. The tour itself lasted no more than 40 minutes and was 90% made up of walking through a limestone cave. We eventually arrived at the glow-worms, hopped in a boat and saw the glow for 5 minutes, and the tour was concluded and had to make our way out. We left with no photos (not allowed) and feeling flat. We then had the rest of the day free as were expecting at least a couple of hours of tour for $200.

Great experience

Steve_C, Apr 2026
Great experience. Really friendly guide and would definitely recommend the boat trip. Would have loved to have taken photos, but I understand the rule

Glowing Glowing little worms.

Adam_B, Apr 2026
It was a rainy day but we weren't bothered. The venue is well presented and naturally forms into its surroundings. The guides are fun and provide some great light heartedness to the experience. Our kids loved the guided tour and particularly the boat ride. As someone not fond of tight spaces (i am 6'1) i found once you get passed the first few metres there was no issue with space, i just needed to duck for a bit. Well worth the time! Interesting fact was to learn the worms use the same kind of venom as spiders to trap their prey.

Magic!

Shell_P, Apr 2026
This is a once in a lifetime experience of pure magic and wonder! It was as though we were in a micro universe with stars shining above us in the caves!

Surprise

Sandy_T, Apr 2026
A different cave experience to any other I have have seen. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the guides were really knowledgeable, friendly and funny. Restaurant could make improvements. Do prep prior to open time and not make customers wait or feel they are rushing you. Could be more choices on menu. Breaky had no plain egg choices, no avocado etc. Gift shop was too expensive. Glow worm pics a little deceiving. Not blueish and not that bright or as many. Are they sick?

Waitomo must do

Anastasia_G, Apr 2026
Amazing and humbling experience. Highly recommend. Suitable for school children and over. Danny was our guide who made it a fun and informative experience.

Life is a little bit brighter

Vanessa_M, Apr 2026
A short tour 45mins but stunning view of the the Glow Worms and great commentary from our Guide. ACE

Beautiful glow worm caves.
