Me and my girlfriend did this activity on our last evening in Isla Holbox and we really enjoyed watching this natural phenomenon.
We were provided with excellent equipment and Alex was a funny and very informative guide. Everything was super well organised and we had plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of the bioluminescent plankton.
We heavily recommend doing this activity and thanks again to Alex for an amazing experience :)

Weather did not allow us to participate, but the proprietor fully refunded the ticket price. Thank you so much, will try to do it next time.

Alex was an awesome guide & we loved this experience! He was friendly, funny & super knowledgeable.
Everything went very smoothly. We learnt about constellations and all things plankton. We were able to swim with the bioluminescence which was incredible! Highly recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Alex as he was super friendly and fun to be around. He picked us up, made sure we understood the entire process, and even taught us plenty about ocean life and stars. I definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to experience the bioluminescence.

Alex was a great guide, making sure all on our group were taken care of. The time shifted to 3 am to avoid a near full moon. My teen girls were worried about the bugs and the muck you have to navigate but all worth it when the magic of these neon creatures comes to life. The weird timing almost made it feel even more special and fun! We learned that the blue luminescence is the most amazing!!

Bring bug repellent! Besides that, it was a magical experience with Alex. He was super knowledgeable and had a great personality. He did the tour in English and Spanish which we really appreciated. We were a family of 5 ranging from 9-41. Everyone loved it.

Alex picked us up from our hotel right on time. 4 others were supposed to go with us but canceled. Alex still took just me and my husband on the tour. We went to his office and donned the wetsuits. It was a short drive to Punta Coco. Alex used his laser pointer to point out stars, constellations, planets and formations. We even saw the Starlink satellites! After stargazing, we headed into the water. Alex did a great job of explaining the bioluminescence to us. He had masks and snorkels so we could go under water to view it. This was an amazing experience that we will remember forever. Alex’s knowledge and humor took this experience to the next level. I hope you can arrange your trip with him! Tips- wear your bathing suit and water shoes. Spray yourself with bug spray. Take only the bare necessities (take pesos for tipping). You don’t need your phone or a towel. Enjoy!

I rarely write negative reviews, and I've done a Bioluminescence tour in Holbox before with a much better experience. I'm not easily scared as I scuba dive with bull sharks, dive at night etc. However, this experience made me and my niece very uncomfortable. It's not really a tour company, it's essentially one guy named Alex who brings you to his house to put on a wetsuit, then makes you walk 1 km/0.8 mile through the dark mangroves with lots of tripping hazards (no flashlights allowed because it's light pollution and then you have a lesser view of the stars). Even after we specifically asked for the flashlight on the way back because we were scared, we were told no. You can't take photos either or flashlight with your phone because we had to leave our phones in the taxi. With the other tour in Holbox I got to swim from the beach with lots of people/tour groups, but Alex took us to the most deserted area to swim in the lagoon. In my experience lagoon + mangroves usually means crocodiles, so I decided to reassure myself by asking Alex if there were crocodiles there, expecting to hear "of course not". Instead, the literal answer I got was "what you think, you attract". Not very comforting. I got out of the water quite quickly as it was completely dark and because Alex started joking about crocodiles on Holbox. There is even a sign by the lagoon that says there are crocodiles there. Please read the few negative review before booking, I only looked at the average rating.
I also did not like the 30 minute lecture on the stars, since I didn't book a stargazing tour, but that's of course personal preference. The guide wasn't friendly either, he didn't even say bye to us because he knew we weren't happy with the tour.

Jennifer I am sorry four your own experience , no words to say, In my experience it's not my activity and everything what I offer for all the people who experience the bioluminescent plankton, it's about u and ur attitude from the beginning until the end .

Wading out waist high into the bay and lighting up the bioluminescent plankton was incredible. Alan did a great job explaining the phenomenon. This experience was much better than my kayaking out in the bioluminescent bay in Vieques, PR. Apparently the summer is peak time here but we had plenty of bioluminescence in December just shaking our hands in the water. Overall very professional and informative. Highly recommend it if you’re in Holbox.

Our adventure to see the bioluminescence in Holbox, Mexico was wonderful! Our guide, Alan first showed us the beautiful stars and constellations above us. We learned all about the stars and the stories about the constellations. It was a once in a lifetime experience, because my family traveled from a city with many lights, we had never experienced the bright stars glowing in the sky. And it wasn't only stars we saw, Alan pointed out Jupiter and Venus. When we were done looking up at the mesmerizing sky above us we went back down the steps and took a 5-10 minute walk to the lagoon in Punta Coco. Alan lead us into the water together, motioned us to form a circle, told us to wave our hands around in the water, and all of our mouths dropped. While we were waving our hands around in the water we saw tiny green plankton moving with us too. Alan gave us a t-shirt to collect the plankton from the water and get a better look at them.

Our tour guide, Alex, was knowledgeable and charismatic.
Pickup at our hotel was very convenient, with little to no waiting time.
It was a beautiful night, which made this experience magical.

The bioluminescence was amazing, it's something you can't record it definitely stays in your memory forever. Algo, muy bonito y bien agusto y las estrellas muy espectaculares.

The bioluminescence and the stars were amazing. Even saw the Milky Way. Alex is very knowledgeable and made us comfortable.

Arguably the worst experience of our trip. We were picked up for the tour early, only to have to wait outside the guide’s house for 30 min sweating in a wetsuit and getting destroyed by mosquitos. Then we had to walk through the mangroves to a swampy area with little wind to keep the bugs at bay. Even when we got in the water, we couldn’t escape the mosquitos.
Do yourselves a favor and do not book a tour.
If you want to see the bioluminescence, it’s literally everywhere around punto cocos, starting at the water’s edge. You can take a taxi to the water, splash around for a couple minutes, and leave on your own schedule. The wonderment diminishes very quickly when you’re getting eaten alive.
There does seem to be a tour that takes you off a dock at punto cocos that extends waaaaaay out into the water where there is enough wind to keep you off the menu. Not sure which operation uses the dock, but if you book a tour, that would be the one to do. No need to dip into the swampy “secret” spot.
Would recommend a physical barrier, like a bug net, for your head. Your feet and hands will still have more red bumps than a 19th century brothel.

Sorry four your experience whit us ,u complain about mosquitos and the time u wait for the activity , the island was full of water on the streets difficult to drive thru that's wait u wait 20 minutes and not 30 minutes ,I tall u many times take your mosquito spray whit u, and u didn't, we don't have the control of how many mosquitos will be :/
U and urs friends stay more than 30 minutes in the water ,and u never complain until u arrive to ur hotel , next time u need to cancel the activity at the beginning right when u don't feel comfortable. The other people don't complain about mosquitos they understood it's not on me

Great tour! Highlight was seeing the fish swim in bioluminescence at the end. We also saw some flamingoes at a distance!
Denny_E, Aug 2024
Moving your hands or feet underwater and seeing the plankton light up. Plus seeing the Milky Way. 2 for the price of one.
Dustin_L, Jul 2024
Alex was fantastic. All of our gear arrived at the hotel as planned and we were picked up on time. When it first location did not have a high concentration of bioluminescent Alex was quick to take us to another. The second location at punta coco was amazing. Our first steps into the water immediately glowed. Alex was knowledgeable and a great guide. The wetsuits, while not necessary got the water, were a great barrier against mosquitos!
Catherine_T, Jul 2024
Went right after a hurricane, and our guide, Alex, made sure we were in a location where you could see the bioluminescent waters. The experience was amazing, and Alex explained everything behind the sparkling water. He also showed us some constellations! The pickup and drop off process was also seamless. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Holbox!

It was so fun driving through town with a bunch of other people from all over the world! The guide had excellent English and was very knowledgeable of the constellations and the science behind the bioluminescent plankton. It was a very enjoyable and memorable experience!
Sneha_S, Jun 2024
We went during the new moon and were able to see the plankton under a starry night! Alex also led a short stargazing session. It was lovely seeing the plankton glow in both water and the sand!
Jennifer_G, May 2024
This wasn't what we were expecting. It was so much better. To swim with the plankton they light up around you while you move. It was like being in the movie avatar and feeling connected to the planet.
John_W, May 2024
Alex was a superb guide who gave the tour in Spanish and English. Very knowledgeable about the stars. His wet suits, water shoes and mask and snorkel were well maintained and clean. Only reason for 4 stars versus 5 was that the degree of bioluminescence was somewhat underwhelming especially because the moon was only a few days past full which was when we booked the tour date.
Jacque_L, May 2024
I loved that Alex pointed out all of the major constellations to us and did the whole tour in both Spanish and English. You could see so many stars, it was amazing. The bioluminescence was really magical to see, and we got zero mosquito bites. The zooming ride to and from the hotel was also really fun! We were provided wetsuits and goggles for protection from mosquitoes which I really appreciated and was a reason I booked this tour over other bioluminescence tours. It was really cool to go to such a remote area on this beautiful island.
Marcel_N, Apr 2024
amazing sky with stars, the guide explained some pictures. Absolute good knowledge about luminescence. Nice ride to the spot and great organization.
Daphne_Z, Apr 2024
Really good experience! Javier was a perfect guide and we loved the explanation of the stars and the bioluminescentie in the water. The wetsuits that they offer are a big plus, as it prevents you from the mosquitos. Highly recommend this tour!
Megan_L, Mar 2024
This was an amazing experience. From the seamless booking and drop off of wetsuits, into the fun jeep ride through town to the mangroves. Then the magic began with our guide Javier showing us the constellations in the night sky and finally we learned all about bioluminescence as we swam around in them, looking through our snorkel masks and making them come alive with our hands. Incredible! Finally Alex and Javier came this morning to our hotel to pick up our wetsuits…what service. Can’t recommend highly enough. Great thing to do with our teenager. Get out and do this!
Jun_H, Mar 2024
When I saw the sparkles in the water, it was amazing! The guide Alex was very kind to arrange a special pick up at my hotel. We also expanded our knowledge about the stars with Alex's explanations. Definitely an unforgettable experience.
Megan_C, Mar 2024
Dont miss this tour! The guides are extremely knowledgeable and take care of everything. This was an experience Im going to talk about for months. From the view of the stars to the bioluminescence-AMAZING!
