Really enjoyed this outing, which included history of one of the darkest parts of Australian history, and lots of opportunities to see great views of costal Tasmania. The guide was extremely engaging and knowledgeable, and provided such outstanding narrative of the history and insights of the area.

We booked this journey during winter. Our driver (Shaun) is a pretty friendly guy. Having a good safety concern about driving as well as helping everyone during the whole trip. Not only sharing us the historical background but also willing to answer our questions.
Port Arthur is a beautiful historical attraction. Good spot for learning about history and walking around for relaxing.

It was an absolutely fabulous tour and if there’s only one day tour you can do whilst in Hobart, I highly recommend this. Was a great combination of the historic charm of Richmond, followed by Port Arthur and then catching some wonderful natural wonders along the way. Colin was very informative and highly entertaining tour guide. With his steady flow of trivia, historic facts and dad jokes (yes there were a few :)), he kept everyone engaged and entertained. A+ overall.

Our tour guide and bus driver, Shaun, was professional, highly knowledgeable, punctual and very professional. The tour itself was excellent and included a great range of activities. It was a lot of walking and being outdoors which I liked and many opportunities to go to the bathroom and to purchase food. Loved the day and would highly recommend!

This tour is a great way to see Port Arthur without a car. The visit to Port Arthur includes a harbour cruise done together as a group with the remaining time left free to explore Port Arthur as you like. Our driver/guide Rod was very knowledgeable providing a lot of history on the drive and plenty of recommendations for things to eat, see, and do in Hobart.

The minivan you go in was tiny and had no leg room.
They say it is a guided tour of Port Arthur and all it was a driver driving you there and giving commentary on sights along the way.
Once there you have to do the tour yourself so you are just paying for the transport and it is not worth it.

Our tour is fully guided, and the experience you describe does not reflect what we deliver every day. It is possible there may have been a misunderstanding of the clear instructions and orientation provided by our guide on the day.
Our tour includes hotel pickup, followed by a fully guided commentary throughout the journey to Port Arthur. Along the way, guests enjoy hosted stops at Richmond, Tasman National Park and the Pirate Bay lookout, each accompanied by information from our guide. When arriving at Port Arthur, our guide provides a complete orientation of the historic site, explaining how the site operates and outlining the many guided experiences available throughout the day. Port Arthur Historic Site offers up to ten separate guided talks and experiences, and our guide ensures guests know exactly how to access them.
Your ticket also includes the short harbour cruise, which is a guided experience operated by Port Arthur staff. We also offer an optional guided visit to Remarkable Caves for those who wish to explore further. Throughout the day, our guide remains available to assist, answer questions and help guests make the most of their time.
Regarding the vehicle, a smaller vehicle was allocated on your travel date. During quieter months of the tourism season, smaller vehicles are used to match the smaller group sizes. Even then, we never travel at full capacity and always leave spare seats to ensure comfort. Our fleet consists of modern, comfortable vehicles, and we take pride in offering the best touring vehicles travelling to Port Arthur daily.
Your claim that the tour “is not guided” is incorrect. The day includes guided commentary, guided stops, a guided orientation, and access to multiple guided experiences at the historic site. Many travelers appreciate having the freedom to choose which of the ten guided talks they prefer, rather than being restricted to a single group.
Our extremely high star rating reflects the quality and enjoyment of this tour for the vast majority of our guests. We take dissatisfaction seriously and always aim to remedy concerns, but your review does not accurately represent the experience we provide. We hope future travelers reading this understand that our tour offers a comprehensive, guided, comfortable and well‑loved experience to Port Arthur.

There is self guided audio available on each building or you can do a guided tour.
The harbour cruise around isle of dead is interesting.
I recommend the scallop pie on the boat. Delicious.
Also the walk to remarkable cave is a must do.

The tour guide I had was very knowledgable and entertaining. The Port Arthur site is well worth the vist if you are in Hobart. Beautiful grounds and interesting history. I paid an extra $30 for the Isle of dead tour which I thought was worth the price.

A very scenic trip from Hobart to Port Arthur with a few nice short stops along the way. The bus driver Phil kept us entertained the whole way and provided a lot of history. We had plenty of time at Port Arthur which had so much to see. The short ferry ride was a nice extra as well. So scenic all around.
