Amazing except for our driver, Aziz
Morocco is a beautiful country and we loved all the planned stops on the 9 day tour. The hotels, especially Hotel Mulino Gardens in Chefchaouen and Auberge Atlas Dades, were lovely, combining charm with modern amenities. Hamid did an excellent job picking the hotels and planning the tour. The reason for the low rating is our driver, Aziz, who unfortunately spoiled many of our hours in Morocco. He was continuously rude to us and bossy, making the many long drives during the tour unpleasant. We expected on a private tour to be given options based on our likes and dislikes, and also for our tour guide to make recommendations for good restaurants etc. Instead, we were given little information. When he did give us an option, it was communicated with no details or explanation of trade-offs (eg. “If we stop here, we will have less time at…”) and it felt as though he were telling us, rather than asking. At times it seemed his likes and dislikes, rather than ours, were motivating the tour. The tour includes many long drives, and so a nice driver communicating information in a pleasant manner is a must. We also would have liked to be given more historical information about the various cities and regions we were driving through. Most other tours we have been on included much more historical details and stories. We would have asked for more, but we did not want to engage in more conversation with Aziz and experience his condescension. If we asked a question or made a remark, the response was often “as I told you,” when usually he had not in fact already shared the information. He treated us like schoolchildren who don’t know anything and can’t do simple things like walking around Casablanca. For instance, we stopped at a movie studio in Ourzazate and were told we had 30 minutes. However, going inside we discovered the only way to see the studio was through a tour, which lasted one hour. When we returned to the car, Aziz very curtly informed us that we had taken, 1.5 hrs. In contrast to Aziz, our local guide in Fez, and Marrakesh, our camel guide, and the hotel managers, especially in Chefchaouen and Dades valley, were a pleasure to spend time with and showed us true Moroccan hospitality. They went the extra mile to give us local knowledge and discover things we could not have found on our own. They also made it clear that the schedule and timings depended on our wishes, completely different from Aziz. We recommend this tour but make sure your driver is not Aziz.
