I'd like to recommend this tour but unfortunately I can't. The guide started the tour right on time and she was friendly but she was inexperienced. She told us right off the bat that she didn't know the architectural history of the buildings we were walking by so we shouldn't ask. She reminded us that it was a food tour and she wasn't there to tell us about history. That was disappointing because while it is a food tour, it's still nice to understand more of the area that you're walking through. I felt like a knowledgeable guide could have told us a few details that would not have gone into history that she wouldn't be qualified to give. The tour itself was disappointing. The balsamic vinegar shop didn't give us very much information about how the vinegar was made. I had to ask why it was called "balsamic". Although the tastings were good. The next shop was supposed to be a bakery that opened at 4:00. We waited 20 minutes and the guide told us that on Wednesday afternoons the baker works alone in the shop and also does delivery so the shop might not open. There was another couple on the tour and the guide asked if we wanted to skip the bakery and go to the final stop or if we wanted to continue waiting, or if we wanted to backtrack and go to a different bakery. The guide should not have asked that question because if the people on the tour didn't agree then that would pit us against each other. One group would have had to do something they didn't want to do, either skipping the bakery or backtracking. The guide should plan the tour route out well enough that they tell us where to go and what to do because we are looking to them to be the guide. We didn't want to skip the bakery so they shouldn't have given that as an option because if the other group did want to skip the bakery then what? Who would have made the decision? I also felt that we had paid enough for the tour that each person should have been able to pick one bakery item instead of being told that we had to split items in half. Also, the salami shop was closed. So if the tour stops cannot be guaranteed to be open on a Wednesday afternoon, then alternate shops should be located. Or else the tour should not be offered at a time when the shops are closed. Overall, three stops for a 2 and 1/2 hour food tour with no salami and no architectural or history knowledge was not a great experience.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry the tour didn’t meet your expectations. While we’re glad you enjoyed the tastings, we understand your disappointment about the limited information, the bakery wait and the closed salami shop.
That day, the guide was dealing with a leg problem, which may have affected the experience. The shop closures were outside her control because they didn't communicate the closing, but we agree that suitable alternatives should be planned and communicated more clearly. We also understand your concerns about being asked to choose how to proceed and about sharing bakery items. Your comments will help us review how we prepare guides and handle unexpected changes.
We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and are sorry the tour fell short.

Great tour of Modena with a great synopsis of historical information as well as opportunities to sample local traditional items. Tess was a great guide full of insight and knowledge. She answered all of our questions and allowed us time in each location to sample and learn.
