Do NOT book

Cynthia_N, May 2026
Do NOT book this tour. My ticket gave conflicting meeting point addresses. We messaged our tour guide 45 minutes before the tour asking fir meeting place confirmation. They didn't respond, I tred to call twice without answer. After chatting with Viator they contacted the your guide 20 minutes into the tour. We paid over $200 USD to spend nearly 2 hours trying to join this tour. I requested a refund it was denied. I've visited many countries and booked many tours as this without issue. I would like my money refunded.

Great, informative walking tour of beautiful Basel

Anthony_G, May 2026
This was an excellent walking tour of Basel. Gina, our guide, was terrific. She was very knowledgeable and overall a wonderful guide. The tour took us through the farmers market, which was right across from the historic and architecturally beautiful Basel city hall, then into the old city part of Basel. Gina pointed out and explained lots of beautiful details on the buildings, many of which are centuries old. We ended with a delicious cheese and chocolate tasting. Once again, Gina showed her expertise on both. It was a leisurely walk and not very strenuous. Overall it was terrific, definitely 10/10. Highly recommended!

Extremely disappointed

Michael_S, May 2026
Disappointed with the entire experience. We stopped at one pastry were given a pastry to go. We did not realize we would be going to a cheese and chocolate that gave tiny portions. Not worth the cost. Seemed like it was more about small tastes so we would buy more from the guide.

Response from Host, May 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. We regret that the format and structure of the tastings did not align with what you were expecting from a food tour. Our experience is designed around tastings at selected local artisan partners, including pastry, cheese, and chocolate, as well as a visit through the farmers market, with the intention of offering guests a sampling of regional Swiss specialties within the tour timeframe. To clarify, the cheese and chocolate tasting location is not owned or operated by the guide. It is a local artisan shop that we partner with as part of the tour itinerary. We understand your concerns regarding portion sizes and overall value perception, and we are sorry that the experience felt more limited than expected. This is not the impression we aim to create, and your feedback will be reviewed with our team to help improve both the clarity of our tour description and the guest experience. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts, as they are valuable in helping us refine our tours going forward.

Not Worth It!

Jacky_W, Apr 2026
My wife and I had a very bad experience with this tour guide comparing with the Italy Naples food tour which we enjoyed so much a few years ago. First of all, the instruction and direction to the meeting place was not clear. The Google map link provided was different from the meeting place description. Secondly, the tour guide did not have a sign "Viator" or something, so we had no way to identify her is the tour guide. Thirdly, she only took us to one pastry shop, then she walked our group away from the marketplace and took us to her cheese and chocolate shop. She gave us samples to try and kept asking us to buy some, which I think is conflict of interest. Finally, according to the description of this tour, she supposed to take us back and dismissed us at the same pickup place, but she did not. She just let us leave her shop and provided direction. Very very bad experience!

Response from Host, May 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. Regarding the meeting point, we always recommend guests contact us directly prior to the tour to reconfirm the exact meeting location, as information displayed on third-party reseller platforms such as Viator can occasionally be incorrect or not fully up to date. We understand how frustrating any confusion at the start of a tour can be and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We also apologize for the difficulty identifying the guide upon arrival. Your comments regarding guide visibility and signage are valuable feedback and will be reviewed internally to improve the guest experience. In regard to the tour itinerary, the experience includes a visit through the local farmers market in addition to pastry, cheese, and chocolate tastings designed to showcase authentic Swiss products and local artisans. We would also like to clarify that the cheese and chocolate shop visited during the tour does not belong to the guide personally, but rather to a local chocolatier partner. Guests are always welcome to sample products without any obligation to purchase. We also appreciate your comments regarding the tour ending location and will review the wording of the experience description to ensure expectations are communicated as clearly as possible. While we regret that the tour did not provide the experience you were hoping for, your feedback is important to us and helps us continue improving our tours and communication for future guests.

Not what I had expected. ...

Lisa_W, Apr 2026
Not what I had expected. Meeting time amongst the three couples were different and meeting location were different. Tour guide was not easily spotted as she did not carry any flags or tour guide clothing to make her stand out. Had expected to visit more than one pastry, cheese, and chocolate shops. We got one pastry each and each couple shared a small bag of bakery good. We went to the tour guide’s business to sample cheese and chocolate. This is just not what I had envision of a food tour.

Response from Host, May 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. We regret the confusion regarding meeting times and meeting points among the group, as well as the lack of clear identification of the guide upon arrival. We understand how important clear instructions and easy recognition of the guide are, especially at the start of a tour, and we will review this internally to improve the guest experience. Regarding the itinerary, our food tour is designed to include a visit through the local farmers market as well as curated tastings of Swiss pastry, cheese, and chocolate from selected artisan partners - Not the tour guide's. We are sorry to hear that the structure and selection of tastings did not match your expectations of a broader food experience. We also understand your concern regarding the quantity and variety of tastings provided during the tour, and we will take this feedback into account when reviewing how the experience is delivered to ensure it better aligns with what guests expect from a food tour. While we regret that the experience did not meet your expectations, we appreciate your honest feedback, as it helps us continue to refine and improve our tours.

Tour Operator Bailed Out

ReyzaPaz_S, Jan 2026
The tour operator did not show up and provided no notice whatsoever. I waited over 30 minutes and attempted to contact them multiple times, with no response. This level of unreliability is unacceptable. I have requested a full refund and expect it to be honored. This was a very disappointing and unprofessional experience.

A must do in Basel

Angie_R, Dec 2025
Your guide makes or breaks a tour. Gina, our guide for this food tour was exceptional. She was knowledgeable, very sweet and funny. She gave us a bit of history as we walked from place to place to experience the delicious food. I highly recommend this tour.

Unequaled cheese and chocolate learning experience.

Tour old town and then hop on the tram to get to the combined cheese and chocolate shop for tasting of both. They were divine, and our guides were really great!

An Historical and Culinary Delight

Leslie_E, Dec 2025
Walking the cobblestone streets allows you to see 400-500 yr old shops up close. But learning about the process to make fantastic cheeses and chocolate truffles is mind blowing. Then eating the treasures is just perfection.

Joanne_G, Dec 2025
Good value tour combining pastry, cheese and chocolate tasting plus some key history of Basel and its architecture. We tasted some amazing local produce, some of which we decided to purchase, because it was really good. There was no pressure to buy. The only negative is that the directions to the meeting point for the tour in the Viator App are wrong and need to be fixed. It took us 15 mins to locate our group as we were in the wrong place on the other side of the marketplace.

Our guide Gina was fabulous-informative & fun. She geared the tour to the older & slower people. The cheese & chocolate person was also great.

Great guide. Great experience. Guide taught us about the city while we walked from tasting to tasting which were all excellent!

A great way to see the old city in one afternoon.

Becky_K, Oct 2025
Such a great way to get a feel and taste of the city! We thoroughly enjoyed our young guide- and he stuffed us full of tastings from each location. Would definitely recommend!

Shawn_W, Oct 2025
It was a great tour with Jean. He walked us through the farmers market area and talked about the history. We stopped and ate a local fruit. Then we went to a lovely bakery, a wonderful chocolate shop and then to a cheese store. The tastings were generous. Jean was friendly and knowledgeable and walked a good pace with us!

Wonderful walking tour

Jill_K, Sep 2025
This was a wonderful walking tour. Lots of interesting info about the city. The pastries, chocolate, and cheeses were amazing. Great value for the price. Remember to bring a water bottle.

Great walking food tour with lots of tastings

Hildy_D, Sep 2025
Jean was a terrific guide! I food was plenty! I saw some earlier reviews that complained about small portions but that is not the case now. I am so full!!! The cheese and chocolate so excellent. Don't pick the cheese danish though if you are expecting something sweet it is quite salty!!! Loved it. Walked 2 miles on a beautiful day though the city so delightful.

KarenW, Sep 2025
While our tour guide, Jean, was very nice - this felt more like a way to promote specific stores. We could have purchased chocolate, cheese and pastries at any of the wonderful shops in Basel instead of on the tour.

Ultimate Fail of a Tour

James_H, Sep 2025
Someone at Viator really needs to look into this tour. It’s a total ripoff. After they arbitrarily tries to change the rime on us, we agreed to another time. That was red flag number one. The guide met us at an alternate pickup point that was very inconvenient for us. We were then walked to a cheese store and served a few slivers of cheese and taken to a chocolate shop and given 4 pieces of chocolate. Doesn’t take a genius to do the math. We could’ve gone to those two stores on our own and down the same thing for over 100 euros less. We were never taken to the farmer’s market like the description said. The tour lasted about half of the time quoted. Since Viator doesn’t do refunds after completion of a tour, I have to now dispute this through my credit card. Stay away from this tour.

Poor Communication

Don_L, Aug 2025
Our tour was canceled by the provider. They wanted us to move to a day earlier which did not work for us. We told Viator that we could not go earlier and wanted to stay with our original time/day. Viator was supposed to contact the provider and according to the provider they did and were told they had a guide who was sick and could not do the tour. We were never told the tour was canceled and we showed up and waited and finally reached the provider for the bad news. Not happy about the poor communication.
