Surfing takes center stage on the golden sands of Weligama, a renowned spot for beginners to catch their first waves. With the guidance of local instructors, each lesson begins with essential safety tips and basic techniques, ensuring you feel confident as you paddle out into the warm Indian Ocean. Experience personalized coaching in small groups, making the most of ideal conditions for all skill levels. With high-quality surfboards and rash guards provided, all you need is your swimwear and a spirit of adventure to embrace the stunning southern coastline of Sri Lanka.

Most surf lessons in Weligama give you 60 minutes session (water and theory). We give you a full 2-hour session — no rushing, no cutting the session short. That extra time is the difference between standing up once and actually surfing. Sessions start at 6:30 AM when the bay is at its calmest and most uncrowded. You get the best conditions of the day, every single morning. Groups are capped at 6 guests so every student gets real attention. Your instructor is in the water with you throughout — not watching from the beach. You get immediate feedback on every wave, every pop-up, every turn. Your lesson bundles let you build on each session day by day. The 5-lesson bundle is the fastest route from never having surfed to riding waves on your own. And if you want to go further, your all-inclusive surf camp adds accommodation, all meals, evening activities and a full week programme — the most complete surf experience in Weligama.

You Become the Street-Food Chef: Unlike a standard cooking class where you chop veggies and stir a pot, making Kottu requires a theatrical, rhythmic technique. You’ll get to wield the traditional twin metal blades on a scorching hot griddle, smashing and chopping the roti to that signature sizzling soundtrack. It’s half cooking, half percussion performance! Live Customization at the Griddle: You won't just follow a recipe. You'll choose your own protein (spicy chicken, rich beef, fresh seafood, or hearty veg/egg) and dial in your preferred spice level right at the hot plate. You are in full control of your perfect plate. The Ultimate Spicy-Cold Pairing: Kottu is bold, savory, and packs a punch. We don't just serve dinner; we teach you why a crisp, cold local brew (like a Lion Lager or robust Lion Stout) is the absolute perfect antidote. The contrast of the hot, crispy roti with the ice-cold beer creates a flavor explosion you simply can't get at a restaurant.

It’s possible to learn to surf independently, but it can take a very long time and even lead to injury. Get your surfing experience off to a great start with this 1.5-hour beginners surf lesson, just for your group. Learn the basics on a soft foam surfboard, including surfing safety, jumping up, and stance, with an instructor on hand to correct you and help you catch waves.

Learn to surf off the coast of Sri Lanka by signing up for a private surfing lesson. Every surf lesson leaves you with memories. This one leaves you with proof. A dedicated photographer captures your session from the beach and in the water — the moment you pop up, the wave you actually rode, the wipeout you will laugh about later. These are not phone snapshots. They are edited action shots taken by someone who knows how to photograph surfing. Nobody else in Weligama packages professional surf photography with a lesson on Viator. Most tourists spend two weeks in Sri Lanka and come home with photos of temples and elephants. You come home with a shot of yourself surfing on a tropical beach break. The photos are delivered digitally after your session — ready to share, ready to print, ready to keep. And your instructor is still fully focused on your surfing throughout. The photographer is separate, so your lesson is never interrupted. This is the session you book when you want the experience and the evidence. You can book our surf lesson-only option with photo help

The surfing season in Arugam Bay typically runs from April to October, during the country's dry season, when the prevailing winds create ideal conditions for surfing. During this period, the bay receives consistent swells, with waves suitable for beginners to advanced surfers. Arugam Bay offers a variety of breaks, catering to different skill levels. The main point break, called "Main Point," is located just a short walk from the town and is renowned for its long, smooth right-hand waves that can extend up to 400 meters. This wave is more suitable for experienced surfers, as it can get quite powerful and fast. For those new to surfing or looking for smaller waves, "Whiskey Point" is an excellent option. It provides gentler, beginner-friendly waves that are perfect for learning or improving your skills.
