Guided sightseeing tours that include the church start at as little as US$20.

Built in 1789, St. Paul's Church is celebrated as the birthplace of German democracy. In 1848–49, it hosted the Frankfurt National Assembly, the first freely elected all-German parliament, which drafted the country's earliest democratic constitution—and turned the church into a lasting national symbol of that democratic movement. Today, it’s a monument, museum, and place of history.

No, St. Paul’s isn’t active. Despite its name, St. Paul's no longer holds religious services or even really looks like a church inside. Rebuilt after World War II bombing damage, it now functions as an open exhibit hall and event venue, hosting commemorations and ceremonies like the Goethe Prize and Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.

It’s surprisingly modern. The upper floor of St. Paul’s Church holds the historic assembly hall where the 1848 parliament met, and it’s still occasionally used for civic ceremonies today. The lower level features wide-open exhibition space, including flags, large murals, and digital displays on the building's history and constitutional legacy.

No ticket is needed for general entry to St. Paul’s—you can walk in and explore the exhibits and assembly hall for free, and the church is open daily. Guided tours, whether standalone or part of broader Frankfurt city sightseeing tours, are nice paid add-ons rather than a requirement to visit.
