Amazing!

Beautiful trail ride with lovely and knowledgeable guides. Horses are beautiful and treated very well!

Disappointing experience with guides

D_H, Aug 2026
We were really disappointed with our experience with the staff at the Spray River guided horseback ride, particularly because this was our first time horseback riding. We politely told the guides that we were nervous and a little scared, hoping for some reassurance before starting. Instead, we were told that if we were scared or nervous, we could simply choose not to do the ride because it wouldn’t be safe. We completely understand that safety is important, especially around horses, but there is a way to communicate this. In fact, being told this made us significantly more nervous. It gave us the impression that the guides did not have much patience for nervous or inexperienced riders and that if we became anxious or needed extra guidance during the ride, they might not be patient or supportive with us. For a first-time experience involving horses, that did not make us feel comfortable or safe enough to proceed. When I explained that we were only looking for some reassurance because it was our first experience, one of the guides responded, “I did reassure you. I also told you that yours I’ve given to kids to ride.” Unfortunately, her tone and attitude did not feel reassuring or welcoming at all. What made the situation worse was what happened afterward. When we politely expressed that we were uncomfortable with how we had been spoken to, the same guide became noticeably more rude. While we were collecting our belongings, she shut the booth door and slammed one of our bags onto the table. She then put on a smile and said, “Have a lovely day, bye,” which came across as very insincere given her behavior immediately beforehand. We weren’t expecting special treatment. We simply expected some patience and reassurance as first-time riders. If a tour welcomes people with no previous riding experience, staff should understand that some guests will naturally be nervous and should know how to communicate safety information in a calm, patient, and supportive way. We ultimately left feeling uncomfortable and disappointed but because of how we were treated and the lack of patience shown.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Thank you for sharing this experience. We’re sorry that your first visit left you feeling unsupported, uncomfortable, and unwelcome. Our guides must assess whether each guest feels comfortable enough to participate, but those conversations should always be handled calmly, patiently, and respectfully, particularly with nervous or first-time riders. The staff interaction and handling of your belongings that you described are concerning and will be reviewed. Everyone must be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. Management will promptly review the circumstances of your ride. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and hope you had good rest of your stay in Banff!

The best experience ever! You can’t miss this!

Such an amazing experience horseback riding in Banff! One of the things that stood out to me immediately was that this is a women-led operation, which I found so empowering and inspiring. You can really tell how much passion and care goes into what they do. It was also very clear that the horses are genuinely well cared for. I especially loved learning about their rescue horses and the fact that they continue to care for a retired herd. It made me feel really good about choosing to ride with a company that clearly prioritizes the well-being of their animals. The staff were incredible as well. One of the kids in our group became really scared and overwhelmed during the ride, and I was so impressed by how calmly and professionally the guides handled the situation. They were patient, reassuring, and made sure everyone felt safe without taking away from the experience for the rest of the group. I also want to recognize the person working at the front desk, although unfortunately I didn’t catch their name! They were extremely knowledgeable and so patient answering questions—not only from clients but even from people who were just passing by and curious about the rides. As for the actual excursion, it was SO much fun. We passed by two rivers and had absolutely beautiful views throughout the ride. It’s definitely important to listen to your guides and follow their instructions, but overall I found the ride relatively easy and really enjoyable. Beautiful scenery, wonderful horses, knowledgeable staff, and an organization you can tell genuinely cares about its animals. Such a memorable way to experience Banff, and I would absolutely recommend it! 🐴🏔️

Rude, unwilling to offer help

GLadys_H, Aug 2026
I got there before 2:50 pm, I was ignored and nobody offer to help or acknowledge me, the attendant then returned and was rude !

Response from Host, Aug 2026

We’re sorry you felt ignored and that the interaction came across as rude. We have been unable to locate your booking from the information provided, so we cannot review the circumstances in detail. Generally, guests are required to arrive 30 minutes before departure to complete their waivers and participate in the required safety briefing. When guests arrive after the designated meeting time, we are unable to accommodate them on the tour. If you would like us to take a closer look, please email your booking number and details to digital@banfftours.com and we will be happy to review. Sincerely BTR team

Incredible experience!

Marcelina_L, Aug 2026
This was probably the highlight of our trip to Banff! It was my first time riding a horse, so I was a little nervous at first, but I ended up having the best experience. I was paired with Raptor, and my fiancé rode Loretto. They were both incredibly sweet, gentle, and well-behaved horses. The guides made us feel comfortable and safe the entire time, and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. We enjoyed every second of the ride and were genuinely sad when it was over. If we had more time, we would absolutely do it again. Highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Banff!

Read the 1 star reviews carefully

Amber_W, Jul 2026
I have traveled all over the world and never left a negative review, but I feel obligated to warn others about my experience. I arrived approximately 45 minutes early for my horseback riding tour near Banff. The GPS directions provided led me to a residential neighborhood rather than the actual meeting location. As soon as I realized something was wrong, I immediately messaged the tour contact through Viator. Unfortunately, no one answered or responded. I then spoke to the number for support several times but the only details they knew were to get help from the hotel they operate behind but are not affiliated with. By the time I was finally able to locate the stable, after running around for 45 minutes, I was too late for the tour. Despite arriving early and making every reasonable effort to contact the operator, I was told I had “missed” the tour and was not offered any refund or accommodation. What disappointed me most wasn’t just missing the experience—it was the complete lack of customer support and accountability. If the meeting instructions or GPS location had been accurate, or if someone in support had responded to me in a reasonable time, this situation could have been avoided entirely. I’ve used Viator for years and have recommended it to friends and family, and never had an issue like this, which makes this experience even more disappointing. I would strongly encourage anyone considering booking to read through all of the 1 star reviews and think carefully before supporting a company like this. I lost $180 dollars, but that’s nothing compared to a lot of other 1 star reviews. I hope this review helps someone else avoid the same frustrating and expensive mistake I made.

Fun Experience with Some Things to Improve

Kseniia_P, Jul 2026
Overall, it was a good experience and we really enjoyed the horseback ride. However, it would have been nice to have an area where the horses could move more freely rather than mainly following a set route. Some of the horses also seemed a little tired. I also noticed that some of the helmets still had hair inside, so it would be great if they could be cleaned more thoroughly between guests. Finally, the group was a bit large, which made the experience feel slightly less personal. Overall, we enjoyed the experience, but there are a few areas that could be improved. It was good experience as it was my first time , but I don’t think I’ll be back again

Make sure you know your weight!

brian_m, Jul 2026
Our guide was very knowledgeable and sweet. The horses were easy to ride and all instructions given were easy to follow. We were sent a message the day before that we would be possibly be weighed that day. One of our people was 2 pounds over and was not allowed to go. That tainted the ride for us to say the least! There was no refund offered and that person was truly hurt and now out the money.

Giddy up

This was such a fun ride, and easy enough for our kids, 12 and 8. Two River crossings, beautiful scenery, really fun!

Nice out door activity with good instructions on riding a horse. Good commentary about some local history.

Diane_P, May 2026
Interesting/enjoyable ride in forest and across 2 rivers. Suitable for those who do not ride and the staff will provide good instruction to keep you safe and ensure the welfare of the horses. Do turn up in good time - the half an hour before hand is essential for helmet fitting and instruction. A mounting block is used which helps get on and off the horse.

No refund

Jawaadzama_S, May 2026
My dad had medical conditions and they had so many policies in the waiver form and we couldn’t complete due to that. And they refused to return the money back.

Great adventure

Stephen_S, May 2026
Friendly staff, well behaved horses, and a great trail crossing several rivers which was a great experience

Excellent experience

Rachel_B, Nov 2025
We very much enjoyed our riding experience. Our original trip was changed due to weather (totally understandable), we're grateful they were still riding despite the cold and snow that day. Our guides were kind and helpful, the scenery was beautiful and the horses were lovely. We hope to come back and do the real river ride in warmer weather!

Great horseback ride!

Such a cool experience! Very beginner friendly, it was so cool going through forests and rivers in Banff. The staff were amazing! Would 100% do it again.

Different kind of experience.

Katrina_B, Oct 2025
I have done it before I love it, but this time my horse just did not want to do the trek so it made my ride more like work and other issues with the horse behind him nipping his behind because he was too slow. Lols. Not as relaxed on this occassion as I wanted to be. My husband enjoyed it a ton and loved his horse.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hi, thank you for riding with us again and for sharing your honest feedback. We truly appreciate returning guests like you! It sounds like your horse may have been having one of those “off” days. Just like people, horses can have good days and not so good days, and we’re sorry this affected how relaxed your ride felt. We’re very glad to hear your husband had a fantastic time and loved his horse. That’s always wonderful to know. If you join us again in the future, please don’t hesitate to let our team know during the ride if anything feels uncomfortable. We’re always happy to make adjustments when possible so everyone can have the calm, enjoyable experience they’re hoping for.
