Itineraries for Your Trip to Split
1 Day in Split for First Timers
Split masterfully blends ancient Roman history with vibrant Mediterranean life, all centered around the extraordinary Diocletian's Palace—a living UNESCO World Heritage Site. One day in Split allows you to explore this architectural marvel, take in panoramic Adriatic views, and experience authentic Croatian coastal culture. The compact Old Town means you can walk everywhere, maximizing your time without the stress of organizing transportation—something I always appreciate on vacation. This itinerary balances must-see historical landmarks with a dose of nature and relaxation, capturing Split's unique character and carving out plenty of time for that other all-important exercise in cultural appreciation: eating. My personal tip is to start early to beat cruise ship crowds and enjoy the city at its most atmospheric.
If you only have time for one thing, make it Diocletian's Palace—and be sure to climb the cathedral bell tower.
Summer brings intense heat, so carry water and seek shade during midday hours between June and August.
Begin your one-day Split itinerary at Diocletian's Palace, entering through the Bronze Gate directly from the Riva promenade. The labyrinthine cellars lead upward to Peristyle Square, the palace's stunning central courtyard where ancient stones still echo with daily life. Climb the Cathedral of Saint Domnius bell tower for breathtaking views over terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic Sea, then admire the elegant Venetian-style Republic Square. Just outside the eastern Silver Gate, stop at the Green Market (Pazar) to browse local vegetables, cheeses, and lavender products—this authentic market offers glimpses into everyday Split life.
Walk 15 minutes west to Marjan Hill, Split's green lung with forested trails and spectacular coastal panoramas. Hike to the Telegrin viewpoint for postcard-perfect views overlooking the city, islands, and mountains—it's a moderate 20-minute climb well worth the effort. Descend on the western side to reach Bene Beach, a local favorite with crystal-clear water, a snack bar and plenty of pine tree shade. Swimmingin the Adriatic, renting a kayak, or simply relaxing before walking back through Marjan's shaded paths toward the old town are a must when it comes to things to do in Split.
One night in Split is enough to get a taste of the city’s magic. The Riva promenade comes alive during the evening, when locals stroll along the waterfront as the setting sun bathes the palace in golden light. Head to the Varoš neighborhood, just west of the palace, for dinner at a traditional konoba (tavern) serving crni rižot black risotto with cuttlefish ink, peka (slow-cooked meat and vegetables), and local wines. After dinner, enjoy drinks at one of the palace's atmospheric bars hidden within ancient Roman walls, or join locals at the Riva for gelato and people-watching.
