Itineraries for Your Trip to Montego Bay
2 Days in Montego Bay for First Timers
One thing I find great about Montego Bay is its proximity to so many different types of experiences. While I like to swim, I don’t generally spend much time simply hanging out on beaches. Nevertheless, I’ve found plenty of ways to spend a few days in Montego Bay, from visiting nearby historic areas to learning about Rastafari culture and beliefs firsthand. I also find it a great base for getting out on the water, whether on a bamboo river raft or a catamaran cruise in the Caribbean Sea. Here’s how I’d suggest spending two days in Montego Bay, especially if it’s your first time.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the Luminous Lagoon.
Be prepared for rain, especially between May and October.
On your first morning in Montego Bay, spend a bit of time getting acquainted with the lay of the land and the city's top attractions, from the Hip Strip to Doctor’s Cave Beach. Instead of driving yourself, join a guided tour that includes transportation and get an insider's view of the city's top attractions.
In the afternoon, head down to the Martha Brae River for a rafting trip. Just don't expect white-water rapids: Rafting trips on the river take place on long bamboo rafts and are led by guides who take visitors down the river in a slow and relaxed manner. Opt for a package that includes transportation so you won't have to worry about driving yourself.
This evening, visit the Rose Hall Great House, a historic home that dates to the 18th century. While the house is open for tours during the day, evenings are the best time to visit for a ghost tour if you’re a fan of the supernatural: Legend has it that the home is haunted by its particularly diabolical former owner.
On your second morning, head out for a bit of swimming and snorkeling. Rather than just heading to a local beach, hop aboard a catamaran cruise and head out to sea, where you'll be able to get up close to tropical sea life without the crowds. Some cruises include party perks, such as open bars and DJs onboard.
Spend your afternoon at the Rastafari Indigenous Village to learn about the Rastafari faith from Rastafarian locals. Visits typically include the chance to listen to drumming and spend time in the community’s farm, too. Just note that the village is a bit outside of town, so it’s best to join a 4WD tour—an exciting way to include transportation.
On your final evening, take a boat ride on the Luminous Lagoon, one of the few places on Earth where you can see bioluminescent waters. Choose to stay on the boat and observe the phenomenon while staying dry, or hop in for a night swim and watch the waters light up around you.
