Itineraries for Your Trip to Lucerne
1 Day in Lucerne for First Timers
With its historic landmarks, scenic lake, towering mountain, and world-famous transport museum, Lucerne is the Swiss city that has it all. In the years I’ve lived in Switzerland, it’s become a go-to day-trip destination, whether showing visitors around or spending a fun day with the family. Living nearby, I’ve even scaled Mt. Pilatus several times, taking advantage of its convenient mountain transport connections and always bookending my trip with a meander around the city or drinks by the lake. Here’s my tried-and-tested itinerary for one day in Lucerne, which hits all the must-see highlights and leaves room for a more local perspective.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the distinctive Old Town.
Fog is common in the city but easily overcome on a journey up to the peaks of Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Titlis.
Lucerne is famed for its picturesque Old Town and many heritage landmarks. With the main sights clustered around the medieval center, a walking tour is a perfect way to get oriented in one morning, taking in highlights like the Jesuit Church, Musegg Wall, Lion Monument, and the Culture and Congress Centre. Be sure to snap a picture as you cross the city’s most famous attraction, the Chapel Bridge—a perfect spot to capture the essence of Lucerne’s charm.
Lucerne’s home mountain, the almost 7,000-foot (2,000-plus-meter) Pilatus, can easily be explored in an afternoon, with hassle-free transportation from Lucerne. Simply catch a bus to Kriens, take a gondola to the middle station, then continue to the peak by aerial cableway. Getting back, do the same again or ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway down to Alpnachstad, where you can ride the train back to town—one benefit of a tour experience is getting all your passes included, which also means skipping the ticket lines.
For the full Lucerne experience, a lake cruise is a must; sunset is the ideal time to set sail. Some tours even include a typical Swiss apéro (evening drinks) or bar access, offering the perfect way to unwind after a busy day while taking in one of Switzerland’s most romantic natural spectacles on Lake Lucerne. After disembarking, continue your evening with dinner on the waterfront, or head away from the main stretch to find locally loved spots like Bistro Krienbröggli or Miguel’s.
