Itineraries for Your Trip to Helsinki
1 Day in Helsinki for First Timers
Growing up with my Finnish cousins telling me all about their snow-covered homeland, Finland has always held a special place in my heart. Helsinki, its elegant capital, is the epitome of cool with its sleek architecture and walkable city center hemmed in by coastal islands and national parks.
Most travelers spend at least one day in Helsinki, and although you’ll wish you had longer, it’s still enough time to sample some of what the city has to offer. This Helsinki itinerary for first-time visitors is designed to do just that, packed with striking landmarks, coastal views, and tasty Finnish foods.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a visit to the quirky Rock Church.
Helsinki’s weather can see four seasons in one day, so pack a sweater and an umbrella, even in summer.
Although many of the city center attractions are within walking distance, one of the best things to do in Helsinki for first timers is a hop-on hop-off bus tour. Start your day with an introduction to all of the must-see attractions in Helsinki, while you save time traveling between them and gain insight into each site thanks to the on-board commentary. Hop off to stroll around Senate Square and visit the Helsinki Cathedral, peek inside the Rock Church of Temppeliaukio, and admire the Sibelius Monument. Or enjoy a view over the city from SkyWheel Helsinki.
If it’s your first time in Helsinki, getting on the water is the best way to experience the coastal city’s unique setting. This afternoon, set out from the waterfront Market Square, where you can grab a quick lunch at the daily market before boarding a sightseeing cruise around the Helsinki archipelago. Cruise past wildlife-filled islands, enjoy magnificent views along the scenic Degerö Canal, and admire the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Suomenlinna Fortress, which spreads across a series of offshore islands.
Round out your 1-day Helsinki itinerary with a fun tasting experience that includes local markets, restaurants, and microbreweries. Tuck into delicious Finnish specialties such as smoked salmon, skågen (toasted appetizers), and reindeer stew, followed by traditional candies and local beers. If you want to stay out after, head to the Kallio district, just north of downtown, which is one of Helsinki’s most popular nightlife areas and has a wide variety of cocktail bars, nightclubs, and live music venues.
