3 Days in Colombo for First Timers

Curated by Sarah Iredalewho was born in Colombo and makes regular trips to her hometown.

Most visitors to Sri Lanka arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and rush to the island’s beaches or interior, giving Colombo a passing glance. It’s no accident: The island’s capital doesn't make a good first impression. Jumbled, frenetic, and often gridlocked—it’s vast, with apartment blocks, concrete shopping parades, and hotels lining a coast of straggly, wave-pounded beaches.

Yet, as I’ve discovered on recent trips to my childhood home, it’s worth lingering here. From the big, kite-strewn skies of Galle Face Green and anarchic lanes of Pettah to colorful temples, food stalls, and peeling colonial monuments—all cut through with glossy new hotels—Colombo has plenty to charm and intrigue. Here’s my guide to unpeeling the layers of this atmospheric city over three days.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Pettah Market before riding a tuk-tuk to Galle Face Green to watch the sunset.

Colombo’s monsoon seasons can be confusing. While the main rains occur from May until July, heavy downpours can hit from October to November, before the December-April dry season.

Day 1

Get to know the culture by its cuisine, which comes as a fantastic revelation. Cherry-pick from a range of culinary experiences, from tours that delve into colorful food bazaars and scrumptious street eats to hands-on market-and-cooking-class combos.

Colombo’s heat, congestion, and sprawled-out geography make walking difficult. Private car and tuk-tuk tours are everyone’s sightseeing go-to and typically include hotel pickup and drop-off to eliminate transport hassles. See a round-up of sights such as Independence Square, the Colombo National Museum, and the Buddhist Gangaramaya Temple as a perfect intro to the city’s zeitgeist and history on a guided tour.

Day 2

Explore Sri Lanka’s capital further today. Grab a cab to the Colombo National Museum to chart the city’s roots, or embark on a shopping spree: riding tuk-tuks among retail hot spots like One Galle Face mall, Pettah Market, and the 17th-century Dutch Hospital shopping precinct in Colombo Fort.

This afternoon, take a street food tour to discover locals’ favorite snacks. Then, hail a tuk-tuk or cab to Galle Face Green, where locals fly kites and stroll come sundown. Hit the pop-up seafront restaurants to dine on fish curry and crab patties as the light fades and kites flutter overhead.

Day 3

Dedicate today to seeing more of Sri Lanka. Travel south to history-laden Galle and its cobbled UNESCO-listed Galle Fort district. The easiest way to explore here in a day is on a private chauffeured car tour: most also include road stops to see beaches, beauty spots, and attractions like the Kosgoda Turtle Sanctuary.

Alternatively, head east on day trips to UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Dambulla cave temples and the rocktop ruins of Sigiriya. Or trade ancient wonders for wildlife on a safari around a national park like Wilpattu, where wild elephants and deer roam the grasslands.
