Well worth the 18 hour day
I recently took the tour to Cascadas de Agua Azul, Misol-Ha, and the Palenque Archaeological Zone, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The itinerary was well organized, and each stop offered something unique and memorable. Be prepared, it is a looong day, but well worth it.
Our first stop was at a breakfast buffet, which was sufficient, but mediocre ($120 peso). Then, we made our way to Agua Azul, where the turquoise waters and layered falls were even more stunning in person, although the waters were a bit diluted due to runoff. We had ample time to walk along the pathways, take photos, visit the surrounding markets, and enjoy the scenery. Misol-Ha was equally impressive—a powerful single-drop waterfall surrounded by lush jungle and howler monkeys. The trail (and cave) behind the falls added a fun sense of adventure.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Palenque. Our guide provided insightful context about the site’s history, architecture, and cultural significance, making the ruins come alive. The combination of well-preserved structures and the surrounding rainforest created an unforgettable atmosphere. There are tour guides at Palenque if you chose to pay for a more in-depth history of the site and Mayan culture.
Throughout the tour, our guide was professional, humorous, friendly, and attentive. The transitions between each location were smooth, and the entire day felt thoughtfully planned. This tour is a fantastic way to experience some of Chiapas’ most iconic natural and cultural treasures, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the region.

Discovering Palenque’s jewels
The visit to the ruins was spectacular - Carlos our guide was super knowledgeable, had lots of interesting facts and it was nice to see the place through his expert eyes. Our driver was really great, always driving responsibly and giving us cool tips about Palenque and restaurants. Lastly, the waterfalls were simply magestic, we were recommended to spend more time in Cascadas Agua Azul which was the right choice.

Luis our driver drove good so that helped the longggg way back if your willing to be in the van for a long period of time amazing experience. If not better to think of staying the night in Palenqué!

Great package
As expected, all aspects of the trip were fulfilled. It would have been nice to spend more time at Misol Ha but I think that the timings are fluid depending on so many factors, so beyond the remit of the Driver

Cool tour, long ride :’)
Great waterfalls! Really nice to go if you are taking the route to San Cristobal. Unfortunately we were handed over to another tour bus halfway through the tour, because of that we couldn’t sit next to each other anymore. The trip from Agua Azul to S. Cristobal takes about 5 hours with lots of turns. We felt it was a very long trip after such a day. Luckily they played a movie in the car which made the time go by a bit faster. If you search the organizer online they have a WhatsApp number where they react very quick. It was easy to reschedule even a day in advance!

Long trip but highly recommended
It was long trip, so little bit challenging with 7 years old girl. But it ends with full of satisfaction. Pickyp at 4 am so we need to wake up 3 am to prepare checkout to carry all our bags. Our driver, Luis was very supportive for that. Road to the Agua Azul was bumpy but we fell a sleep until we dropped by Ocosingo for the breakfast at 7 am. AGUA AZUL is really beautiful and it gets more spectacular when you go up higher. MISOL HA was only one big waterfall but you can pass through behind it. It is fun if you can stand for getting little but wet. Finally Palenque ruin is really something. It is smaller than I expected and then other many ruins near Merida or Tulum but well preserved and interestingly you can go inside the pyramid which is different. Finally we could get dropped in feont of hotel in Palanque where we stay for a while. I appreciate the cordination of tour operator and our excellent driver. Highly recommend this tour.

When to visit

Agua Azul is a great destination for photographers. For fewer crowds, get there early in the day.
While swimming at Agua Azul is popular, it can also be dangerous—swift currents, submerged logs, and other hazards are common.
Take water shoes to protect your feet if you go in the river.
People Also Ask
Is visiting Agua Azul Waterfalls worth it?
That depends. While most travelers enthuse about the waterfalls’ crystal-clear turquoise tones, getting there involves a tiring road journey. If you’re traveling between Palenque and San Cristobal, then Aqua Azul makes for a convenient stopover (the waterfall is a 90-minute drive from Palenque’s archaeological zone.) Many coach transfers include a stop here.
How long does it take to visit Agua Azul Waterfalls?
If you’re visiting as part of a tour, then operators will typically schedule between 2-3 hours to visit the waterfalls and take a swim (there are several swimming points.) The surrounding jungle is also stunning, with multiple scenic outlooks, so be sure to take a camera.
How should you dress at Agua Azul Waterfalls?
The area around the Agua Azul Waterfalls is home to multiple waterfalls and there’s a trail that connects the various cascades. It can get slippery when wet, so wear a sturdy pair of closed-toe shoes (save flip-flops for the pool.) Bring a dry change of clothes—loose, comfortable shorts and T-shirts work fine.
Is Agua Azul Waterfalls safe for kids?
While the Agua Azul Waterfalls is safe for adults, those traveling with children should consider their age and ability before visiting. There are designated safe spots for swimming, but other areas have strong currents and other hazards have even led to drownings in the past. Older children are fine with supervision, but families with younger kids and infants should probably find another activity.
When is the best month to visit Agua Azul Waterfalls?
If you want to see why Agua Azul is nicknamed the Blue Eye, then head here during Mexico’s dry season (November-May): that’s when the waterfall’s turquoise color will really pop. You’ll also enjoy sunny, dry, and temperate weather. The rainy season brings muddy brown water.
Can you go to Agua Azul Waterfalls on your own?
Technically, yes. Travelers can travel to Agua Azul in a private car or rental vehicle, or using the public minivans known as colectivos in Mexico. That said, the area has been targeted by political groups who set up blockades and have been known to target tourists, so your safest option is to come here with a group.
