Syros is not a typical Cycladic Island. During the 19th century, Hermoupolis, its capital, was the major commercial, financial and industrial center of Greece, also known as the «Manchester of the Mediterranean»! This is why, in one part of the city there are neoclassical, impressive buildings of the bourgeois class, while in the other half, you can walk through an amazing industrial wasteland, full of tanneries, warehouses, textile factories, Neorio shipyard and working class neighborhoods. Starting from Kini beach, we’ll explore the western shores of Syros, hiking northwest with the endless blue of the Aegean Sea as our constant companion. The trail takes us through a landscape rich in flora, featuring rockrose (cistus), spiny broom, thyme, oregano, arugula, olives, figs, capers, and sage—a true celebration of Mediterranean biodiversity. We’ll make stops at secluded beaches to swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean, far from the crowds. Our hike concludes back at Kini beach, where you’ll have the option to enjoy a traditional local meal right by the sea.

Enjoy an unforgettable experience on the northern side of Syros, with 360-degree views of the endless blue Aegean Sea and the surrounding Cycladic islands. We are located in the small settlement of Kambos in Apano Meria, the northernmost settlement of Syros, from where we begin our hike. We walk along old, characteristic Cycladic paths—landmarks of a bygone era. We pass by an abandoned marble quarry, with visible signs of historical use. The entire Apano Meria region of Syros is part of the Natura 2000 program and spans an area of 804 hectares. Natura 2000 is a Europe-wide network of protected areas established by the European Union to conserve biodiversity. It aims to protect endangered species of plants and animals, along with their natural habitats.
