Top Mendocino How to Get Around in 2026

Immerse yourself in Mendocino County’s majestic redwood forests on this railbike tour along Pudding Creek. Starting at the Skunk Train Depot in Fort Bragg, you’ll follow your guide along historic railroad tracks, pedaling through the woods on an electric-assisted open-air vehicle, with ample opportunity to observe the local wildlife. This is a perfect activity for families with children six years and older.

Walk through Mendocino, a coastal village of Victorian homes set above dramatic Pacific headlands, on a self-guided audio tour that plays automatically as you explore. Starting near the town center, you’ll follow a walkable route through historic streets, scenic overlooks, and key landmarks. Along the way, visit sites like the Ford House, Kelley House Museum, the Temple of Kwan Tai, and the Mendocino Headlands. You’ll learn how a remote logging outpost grew into an artist community, from the shipwreck of the Frolic to the town’s preservation and its role as a filming location for Murder, She Wrote. Explore at your own pace—pause to browse galleries, stop at a café, or take in the ocean views. The audio resumes whenever you’re ready, so you can move freely without keeping up with a group. This is a self-guided experience (no in-person guide). Download the tour in advance and use it anytime—it works offline and follows your location along the route.

Train enthusiasts, family travelers, and nature lovers will all enjoy this two-hour Skunk Train journey. You'll ride from the valley floor to the highest point of the rail line, admiring the views of the redwood forest and Noyo River Canyon. Stop to check out the oldest tree along the track, the Wolf Tree. A scenic and relaxing tour into nature.
