Getting around

While key transport hubs and towns in Jammu and Kashmir are served by state-run buses, you'll find it much quicker and easier to get around the state by car, although car rentals aren't common in this part of India. Instead, hire a car with a driver to take you around or sign up for a guided tour that includes private vehicle transportation.

Traveler tips

Many visitors to Jammu and Kashmir come to the state to see the Vaishno Devi Temple, among the most sacred temples in India for goddess worship. Note that if you plan to visit, you'll need to register (for free) in the town of Katra before you set off. While you can take a pony or helicopter up, many people opt to trek instead. The trek is roughly 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) and reaches elevations of 5,200 feet (1,585 meters).
