Things to do in  Alwar

Tucked away deep in Rajasthan’s craggy Aravalli range, the 17th-century fortress town of Bhangarh has long been touted as the most haunted place in India. Many believe that the city was abandoned due to a curse, and rumors of ghoulish activity in Bhangarh has kept the place unoccupied for centuries.

One of a handful of tiger reserves across India, Sariska Tiger Reserve offers visitors the chance to see all sorts of birds and mammals in their natural habitat. Once the private hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Alwar, the reserve occupies a forest on the edge of the desert and is home to all sorts of creatures, including tigers.

Dating from the late 18th century, the Alwar City Palace is an excellent example of blended Rajput and Islamic architecture. Originally built as a regal residence, it now houses government offices amongst its beautiful arches and pavilions.

A short drive south of Alwar will take you to Siliserh Lake, a large lake flanked by forest. The government-run Hotel Lake Palace—housed in a 19th-century hunting lodge—offers food, drinks, and lodging on the banks of the lake, and boat operators run tours out onto the waters.

Alwar Fort, also known as Bala Quila, presides over the city of Alwar from its perch in the Aravali Range. Although now in ruins, it’s among the few remaining forts in Rajasthan that predate the Mughal Empire and offers lovely views of the city.

Next to Alwar's City Palace, the Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri is a two-story cenotaph (memorial site) erected in honor of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh, one of the former rulers of Alwar, and his wife Moosi. It's characterized by a mix of red sandstone and white marble architecture, and features an intricately decorated ceiling covered with scenes from mythology and royal life.
