Top Hangzhou Nature Walks

Meet Hangzhou through the eyes of a local cultural researcher and content creator. With an RMA in Cultural Analysis from the University of Amsterdam, a BA from Nanjing University, and five published academic papers on art and cross-cultural studies, I bring a research-based, cross-cultural perspective to exploring China. On this bike tour, we’ll explore a simple question: How did a lake become a work of art? West Lake may look like untouched nature, but its landscape was shaped over centuries by gardeners, monks, scholars and artists. We’ll cycle quieter routes through Yang Gong Causeway, classical gardens and wetlands, then ride into the Longjing tea hills to visit the China Tea Museum and see the tea landscape up close. Rather than simply checking off famous sights, we’ll explore how Chinese ideas about nature, beauty and landscape shaped one of China’s most iconic places.

Experience the poetic beauty of Hangzhou in a day filled with nature, culture, and fun. Begin at West Lake, visiting a hidden lakeside garden and gliding across peaceful waters on a local water bus, then wander along the lakeside. After lunch, opt for a gentle short hike to capture panoramic views, or visit Leifeng Pagoda with convenient elevator access to enjoy the scenery effortlessly. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the heart of the Longjing tea plantations: pluck fresh tea leaves, hand-roast them, and savour the freshly brewed tea. Bathed in soft sunlight amid rustling tea leaves, this makes the perfect serene ending to your day in Hangzhou.

Hangzhou summers are hot, but this 4–5 km half-day trail offers a cool escape. In hours, see green mountains, streams, and tea fields. Start at Jiuxi. Trees block sun, drop temps. Moist air rises from streams. Hop stones or wade barefoot—a joy that beats heat. On misty days, "Jiuxi Smoke Trees" fits—fog drapes like ink art. Water, shade, greenery = natural AC. Uphill, forest turns to tea terraces. Reach Longjing Village, 1,600-year-old home of Longjing tea, the "Queen of Green Tea." Views of emerald bushes cover slopes. Rest, sip tea with snacks, hear of Emperor Qianlong's praise. Jiuxi is wild nature; Longjing is culture and fine tea. Together: scenery, heritage, refreshment. This route suits all—easy, rewarding. Lace up, bring your camera, and enjoy a half-day that cools, recharges, and connects you to Hangzhou's soul.
