Aaron and his team were really informative and trained myself and my wife well. We both speared our first fish within 30min. The guide also let us take some of his fish home, which was great for a fresh caught dinner. Would recommend to anyone who is interested.

We had a wonderful experience for first time spear fishers. It’s not an easy sport! Aaron took a lot of care to make sure we had the idea down, and then was beside us in the water the whole time to assist. We stopped at two different places to find fish and came back with several that we brought back to eat.

Fun time! Good guides and very informational. Great way to start out. Water is choppy and would definitely know how to snorkel before going.

This spear fishing trip was much different than I had expected. We started the spearfishing trip in the classroom. I found the instruction very helpful. After the classroom we got on the boat and went out near an island to fish. After getting into the water we were left to fend for ourselves. The instructor gave no further instruction in the water in regard to how to find fish or where to go. My friend was not comfortable in the water and the instructor did not help comfort or help at all. She had to get out and sit in the boat for the whole trip. The waves and current were significant so I would not recommend to anyone who is not pretty comfortable in the water. The instructor left us completely and was not visible to me or the rest of the group the a majority of the time. He was just doing a personal fishing trip for himself. I did not feel overly safe and felt as if you had trouble swimming or with your gear the instructor was not there to help. The boat driver was great and I felt like had to make up the for the lack of instructor. Would only recommend this trip if you are pretty comfortable in the water and free diving and do not want the help of an instructor in the water. December 2025

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your feedback. I'm sorry you're feeling disappointed by the experience. Sometimes the conditions are a bit rough here on the Costa Rican pacific coast and we have to deal with current, wind or murky water. Unfortunately, it's not something we can control or predict. It's part of the experience. And Spearfishing like any other open water sport is definitely for people comfortable in the water, especially here, you are absolutely right.
After the classroom session focusing on how to use the speargun safely and how to catch the right fish, the guests should receive a complete orientation briefing (current, depth, where to fish, etc) by the instructor, on the boat, at the dive site, before getting in the water. Then the instructor generally jumps in the water with the guests (organised in buddy teams of 2 or 3 people) to demonstrate technique, point some fish, catch one, etc, for a little while (depending on the needs) under the full-time watch of the boat captain. Then the instructor gets back on the boat to supervise everyone from there, helping reloading spearguns, cleaning fish, etc, with the help of the captain. The instructor cannot obviously be with only one buddy team or one person all the time, he has to be there for everyone.
If it didn't happen exactly like that, I'm sorry, I'll review with Aaron what was wrong on that day and make sure it doesn't happen again. And, as you are our first one-star comment in 12 years of business, I invite you for a free spearfishing trip when you come back to Tamarindo!
Best regards,
Gauthier

We had an awesome time, catching 5 fish between the pair of us on a day where the water was a bit murkier, even has first time spearfishers without free diving experience.

I had an amazing experience with my guide. We went to one spot and saw no fish, then we went to another and I was able to spear four different species. All edible and were filled by the guide. I would highly recommend this trip. It was a great experience. And the boat captain made sure I had an amazing time as well. Both were very nice and helpful and answered all question with expert knowledge. I can’t enough wonderful things. It was truly amazing.

We had a great time! The guide gave us a good safety briefing and we had a lot of time to catch fish! We went to 2 separate locations and caught several fish by the end of the day. The guides even let us keep some of their catch. It was a really fun experience!

Water can be very choppy. Hard to dive down but Guiterras is a good instructor. Safety is important.
