This was a perfect cruise ship excursion. There is not much to do in Surabaya, but our guide tailored the tour perfectly to fit our taste. We visited two temples, ate lunch and went to a spa. We were able to do whatever we wanted with the time provided with a guide and driver. We do not enjoy museums so we focused more on other activities. Salsa was our guide. She entered each location with us to be sure that there were no language barriers. What we thought would be a very lackluster day turned out to be one of our favorites so far!

Our tour guide, Budi, was a wealth of information and bridged the gap between existing culture and historical perspective. He was particularly adept at involving us in each of the sites we visited and activities we participated in. We started at the national Bank Museum, where we were also able to interact with local school children. After visiting several other buildings, we took pedicabs to Chinatown and visited a temple, where we also not only watched puppet shows pertaining to historical reenactments, but we are also able to personally participate in puppet shows. We also met the gentleman who created, carved and dressed the puppets. Budi also took us to various altars and described in detail various religious customs and traditions. We also visited the local spice market, and were given pieces of candy by Budi to distribute to the local vendors, a process that they really seemed to enjoy. We also visited an Arab market and the mosque associated with it, followed by a visit to another Buddhist temple in an amusement park complex, and participated in a custom where we released birds into the wild ourselves after making wishes. Following a delicious lunch at a very nice local restaurant, where we also tasted a "snake" fruit for the first time,we visited the Heroes Monument before returning to our ship. What made the experience even more special was that Budi frequently took pictures and videos of us, and provided those to us via WhatsApp at the conclusion of our tour. All in all, the tour was a very enjoyable experience, made even more special by the fact that we participated so much in local traditions and customs. We highly recommend this tour and Budi (along with his very professional driver).

Another very successful Viator day. We had tour guide, Nabila and driver Krishna take us around Surabaya. First of all we discussed our interests and then they escorted us to many places in the city. Nabila was adorable, informing us of local history, as well as customs, and traditions on the Island. She was a delightful tour guide. Our highlight was a short ride on a becak, (like a tuk tuk) followed by a visit to a local genuinely original market. Krishná was an expert driver who was always ready to pick us up. He found the best parking spot right outside the market. An excellent day was had.

Salsa was an absolute. She is well informed of the history and local culture. We enjoyed every minute with her.

Very interesting and informative. Friendly guide, tasty lunch. Sensitive to my need to be back to the cruise ship on time.

The tour was well organised and our guide, Pak Agus, was extremely knowledgeable and kind. Highly recommended if you want to know more about the city's 1100-year history.

Our sweet guide Fitri was an amazingly sweet, gentle human with a warm smile and solid knowledge of the history, culture and spiritual aspects of this melting pot of Surabaya.
We saw Kenjaran Park, the wet market, Old Town, Crossed the Red Bridge into ChinaTown and ate at Pondok Tempo Doeloe Juanda. We saw Four Faces, Arka Joko Dolog, and the 13th Century Temple.
Seeing this city's history of continuous conquerors, its overpopulation, its desperation for clean water and fresh air is a testament to what dictatorship and war bring onto a lush nation. The people are warm, our smiles and our interest in their daily lives seemed to be gratuity enough.
We visited on Christmas Eve, when the whole city (from the wealthier banking district to the slums at the open sewer) were off work and crammed onto gridlocked traffic.
If you are traveling from a well-heeled part of the world, bring your patience, your curiosity, your tolerance. You might find yourself praying you don't get hit by the millions of speeding motorbikes, or become nauseous from the sick soupy air. You will be best off if you have a strong stomach and can walk on uneven surfaces. Grateful for the opportunity.

East Journey Travel is a professional service run by Stanley, who I met today at the restaurant he contracted for his tours. He's younger than I thought he would be. His communication with clients is immediate and direct so you're not left wondering how and where you will meet your guide at port. Today we were fortunate to have Yuni Nurariyani as our personal East Journey guide and "godmother". We visited all the destinations on our list plus one more, and Yuni explained everything we needed to know about where we were, and much more. We even asked her personal questions about what it's like to live in Indonesia and her family life. She explained all we wanted to know, giving us a deeper insight into the culture we were visiting. Tomorrow we will have another East Journey Travel shore excursion in Probolinggo and we hope our next guide matches Yuni's sincere connection. She's a high bar to reach!

Syaiful is a top guide and the driver got us safely through the traffic. The tour was very interesting and we learned a lot about Indonesia: politically, religiously, culturally, and culinarily 😊 We felt very safe and everything was wonderful.

We toured with Qowim who took us to the old traditional market, the Heroes monument/museum, a puppet show at the Chinese Temple, a becak ride and to the Hotel Majapahit for coffee. He told us about the history and significance of the various sites, and we enjoyed our time with him and our driver. Lots of laughs ...

Olivia was our guide and she was FABULOUS! We had no idea what there even was to do or see in Surabaya and she created a memorable day that we will cherish! She documented the day via pics for us and then sent them to us. We saw a puppet show in a Chinese temple, we went to an abandoned amusement park and saw wonderful statues and another temple, e went to a spice market, then for a delish traditional meal and ended with ice cream in a 100 year old place. She truly made the day special for us!!
Linda_S, May 2025
Olivia was a wonderful tour guide. She customized the tour to include the things we want to see/do and gave us a thorough understanding of Surabaya. An excellent tasting the Indonesian cuisine at the lunch provided.

We had a great trip around Surabaya. We were picked up straight from the boat and our lovely guide and driver were excellent with very good English. This just happens to be one of the most amazing tour experiences we have ever had. We took a chance on a private tour, for the first time in our lives, and we were amazed by the experience! Our guide, Laila and our driver Bedjo were fantastic! To begin with, the vehicle we were in was clean and very comfortable and there was water waiting for us. Bedjo was an awesome driver and contributed to the tour by giving additional information about the stops we were at. I was happy to have had the opportunity to chat with Laila before our tour, in an effort to plan the itinerary. She was very open to coming up with the plan that would help us see everything we wanted to see in the fabulous city of Surabaya. We hit almost all of the highlights of Surabaya, and the tour even included the most delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Seeing the traditional market was one of the highlights for me, and when we went over to the Arab market, Laila helped me purchase some batik at a fantastic price!
I would absolutely recommend east Journey travel and without a doubt, you would be lucky to get Laila and Bedjo as your guide and driver!

Budi was an excellent guide, who not only displayed excellent English language skills, but also had incredible knowledge of his touristic area. We had specific requests for history related to the Second World War, and also knowledge of cultural aspects of the region. He not only covered these subjects well, but also taught us other facts previously unknown to us, He is personable, friendly, intelligent and knowledgeable, with a professional disposition and charismatic personality. We thoroughly recommend his services.

In depth independence history and sites and city markets were a great combo. Excellent lunch , driver and guide.
linda_r, Mar 2025
Pick up was easy and your was enjoyable The tour of the market was fascinating. The day was organized and we were taken back to port in plenty of time before we departed

Great tour and introduction to Indonesian history and culture. We learned so much as we explored the city. Minnie was wonderful!

We had a wonderful day in Surabaya. Olivia was an absolutely fantastic tour guide! Her knowledge and enthusiasm was perfect. She met us at the port with a car and driver. It's so much better than doing the big bus excursions from the ship. She took us all over Surbaya. Often we were the only tourists to be seen. We wanted to shop for some Batik and she made an extra stop at a wonderful uncrowded store at the end of the day. Because we didn't have a lot of time, she even helped with the shopping. It was a perfect way to see Surabaya!

Bring your list of sights ,and they will accommodate
One on one is so much better
Our guide was experienced and broad thinking

Our guide was Am??? - he did not have a name tag and he did not have a shirt that said East Journey Tours. He was very personable but lacked knowledge. We had to ask questions in order to start a dialogue. The driver never spoke a word.
We went to an amusement park and we asked if it was open because we did not see any children. He said it was open but the children were on the other side. Later, we found that the park had been closed for a few years.
He was unable to answer some simple questions. He had no idea where to take us ,but luckily, I had a list from the web site.
I have never taken a Viator Tour which I did not rate a 5.
This young man will some day with more knowledge be a wonderful guide. Right now he is not ready to be guiding.

Surabaya is a large port town that doesn’t have a lot to offer, which is why we booked a private tour. While our guide was nice, her level of knowledge was below what we have experienced from 90% of tour guides. Furthermore she spent a significant amount of time relating to the driver rather than giving us information on the city, country, or areas we were passing. We were disappointed. The best we saw was the Heroes Monument and Museum.. and we had a museum guide for that. The submarine was also interesting.

We had a fantastic private tour in Surabaya! The personalized experience allowed us to explore at our own pace, making it far more enjoyable than a big bus cruise ship tour. Our guide Abus was knowledgeable and friendly, enhancing the experience. Highly recommend this tour for an intimate adventure!
