Was very cool to see a completely different part of Japan that tourists don’t really go to. Our tour guide was very good and the traditional meal from Nikko was amazing. Only complaint is how long we were in the bus but that is to be expected since Nikko is so far away from Tokyo.

Nikko Tour: Shrine, Lake and Waterfall with fall colors

B_G, Nov 2025
Excellent tour. Enjoyed the tour at the Nikko shrine, Lake view and Waterfall. Mid November is busiest time. While traffic is unpredictable, the tour returned promptly at 6:45pm. Easy and relax tour. Rest stops have souvenirs and food shops.

Ouch!! Might want to take the train and do this yourself!

Michael_R, Nov 2025
First off, without a doubt, the bus staff was phenomenal. The 1 star in no way reflects them. I’m writing this at 10:30 at night. We got in this bus at 8:30 in the morning. We still have 30 more minutes before we get back. This has been a complete nightmare. Apparently, the bus company knew this was one of the busiest days in the whole year (unknown to us) for the Niikko tour. They should NOT have sent this bus. We didn’t arrive to the shrine until 12:42 pm. By the time we walked to the shrine, had the tour operator get our tickets, and then wait AGAIN to enter, we were limited to 40 minutes in the shrine area. Afterwards, lunch was rushed with little time to shop or get bathroom breaks before we hit the road for what would be the longest bus ride of my life. Over 8 hours of a bus ride, with no more sightseeing. The road to the lake was so bad, we barely moved up the hill. Completely dark at the crest, there was no stopping to see the lake anymore. And no more stops at all, except for bathroom breaks and mandatory driver breaks. All, the, way, back. An entire (and then some) day wasted sitting inside a bus. My wife and I took this tour over a decade ago and were so excited to show our kids…now we utterly regret going.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Dear Michael, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback, and for your kind words about our bus staff. We will be sure to pass along your praise to them. We are truly and deeply sorry for the exceptionally poor experience you and your family endured on the Nikko tour. Your description of an 8+ hour bus ride, rushed stops, and skipped sights due to extreme traffic is not the memory we wanted for you, and we sincerely apologize for this failure. Your frustration is completely understandable, and we are devastated that we turned a long-awaited trip into a "nightmare." Your feedback, along with our internal reports, has led to an immediate operational change. We have decided to stop operating this tour on weekends and national holidays during the peak autumn foliage season. As you unfortunately experienced, the extreme traffic and overtourism on these specific days make it impossible to provide a positive experience, and it is unfair to our guests. We know this response cannot give you back your day, but we wanted to be transparent about the actions we are taking to ensure this does not happen to future travelers. We wish you and your family safe and better travels in the future. Sincerely, The HIS Team

Sam is the man

keith_m, Oct 2025
It was just perfect. Not too long dragged out but at a nice pace. Sam our guide was lighthearted and humorous and helped pass the time on the bus with information. The bus ride is dependent on time of day traffic but the bus was comfortable and our 2 hr ride went well. Expect to climb many steps at the shrine as this is the site where you’ll spend most your time.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Keith! We are thrilled to hear that your trip was just perfect and proceeded at a nice pace. We agree that Sam is fantastic! We're delighted that his lighthearted and humorous approach, combined with his informative guidance, helped make the bus ride enjoyable. We appreciate your helpful note about the need to climb many steps at the shrine, which is great advice for future travelers. We hope to welcome you on another one of our tours soon!

Kamakura & the Colossal Statue of Buddha

Kenneth_H, Oct 2025
Our guide was excellent & well informed on Shinto & Buddhist iconography & ritual. We booked the tour to see the bronze statue of Amida Buddha of Kamakura & we were overwhelmed. To our delight the tour includes a visit to island of Enoshima. A must tour for understanding Japanese Buddhism & Shintoism.

Good bus day tour to get out of Tokyo and into some mountains.

Brent_C, Oct 2025
Ken was a great tour guide. The Futarasan-jinja Haiden shrine was amazing to see and it's not hard to understand why it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Kegon Falls and Chuzenji Lake were also beautiful. The Irohazaka roadway was interesting to ride on and I am amazed at the skill of the bus driver on some of those tight turns. Definitely recommend the tour. Things to be aware of, there are 200+ steps at the shrine site so be aware you will be going up stairs. There is still some walking for the tours, but it's also not a super large amount. Lunch was good, but it would have been helpful to have instructions on how to eat it for non-Japanese participants. Overall a great tour to see the mountains of Japan and not just be in the city of Tokyo.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Brent! We're thrilled to hear that you had a great experience on our Nikko tour. We'll be sure to pass along your high praise to Ken; we agree he is a fantastic guide! We are also very proud of our driver's skill on the Irohazaka roadway and are happy you enjoyed the beauty of the shrines, Kegon Falls, and Lake Chuzenji. We appreciate your helpful feedback regarding the instructions for the lunch and the note about the stairs—this is valuable information we can use to improve our communication to future guests. We are delighted that you enjoyed seeing the mountains of Japan. We hope to welcome you on another HIS tour soon!

Must-see tour of Nikko, a perfect blend of history and stunning natural beauty of Japan.

Andrey_B, Sep 2025
Nikko is a must-see tour that explores great historical significance of the first shogun of Japan and it unlocks many secrets of the famous Toshogu shrine. If that wasn’t enough, the tour takes visitors to a stunning volcanic mountain lake and a second largest waterfall in Japan. It is a truly transporting experience, and please don’t forget to visit a sacred chamber to hear the amazing crying dragon, as well as take the elevator down for a nominal fee to see and hear Kegon waterfall up close (free platform viewing is also great, but the view from elevator station below is simply unforgettable). The tour guide provided most informative and interesting narration, and he was highly responsive to specific questions and needs. I highly recommend this tour, and while I was in Japan solo on business this time, I hope for a family vacation in Japan and we’ll definitely go on this wonderful Nikko tour.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you so much for your truly wonderful and detailed review, Andrey! We are thrilled to hear that you found the Nikko World Heritage 1 Day Tour to be such a transporting and enriching experience. It's fantastic that you appreciated the historical significance of the Toshogu Shrine and the special, unique elements like the "crying dragon" and the close-up view of the magnificent Kegon Waterfall. We agree that those moments make the day unforgettable! We are also very proud of our guide's informative and engaging narration, and we'll be sure to pass along your high praise to them. We truly appreciate your strong recommendation, and we sincerely hope to welcome you and your family on this wonderful tour during your next vacation to Japan!

Worth the drive! Beautiful scenery!

Jill_W, Apr 2025
Excellent trip. Very well organized and comfortable. We skipped the organized lunch and found food on our own since my 12 year old is somewhat less adventurous than I am. Beautiful scenery and well worth the drive from Tokyo. Our guide, Kaori, was excellent!

Judith_H, Apr 2025
Wonderful destination with a lovely warm and enthusiastic guide who made it all so enjoyable.Would recommend seeing this wonderful place.

Make sure of forecast before going

Erica_F, Apr 2025
Awful day due to weather. Very heavy rain. Long walk to temple in puddles steep hill and lots of steps with no rails. Too many people with umbrellas in way. Then travelling up into mountains shouldn’t have gone. 5 ins snow cars sliding and broken down. Very high hairpin bends very frightening. And then when at top could not even see lake or waterfall!!!! Even guide said she was scared. Bus driver amazing. Food at restaurant no explanation of what things were and cold. Not enjoyable. Guide lovely but difficult to understand at times. Not a very good day mainly due to weather.

Response from Host, Apr 2025

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your Nikko World Heritage 1 Day Tour. We are genuinely sorry to hear that the weather significantly impacted your experience and that you found the day to be unenjoyable. We understand your frustration with the heavy rain and the challenges it presented during the temple visit, including the long walk, puddles, steep hills, and steps. We also acknowledge your concern regarding the crowded conditions and the difficulty navigating with umbrellas. We regret that the weather also affected the mountain portion of the tour, resulting in snowy conditions and limited visibility of the lake and waterfall. We recognize that the hairpin bends may have been unsettling, and we appreciate you acknowledging the skill of our bus driver. Please be assured that Japan maintains a high standard of road safety and infrastructure maintenance, minimizing the risk associated with such roads. We understand that weather is an uncontrollable factor, and we apologize that it adversely affected your tour. We strive to provide accurate weather forecasts, but sometimes conditions change rapidly. We also take your feedback regarding the lunch experience seriously. We apologize that the food was cold and that there was a lack of explanation regarding the dishes. We will address this with the restaurant to ensure better communication and food quality in the future. Lastly, we acknowledge your comment regarding the guide's clarity and will work on improving communication. We appreciate your understanding and hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a more enjoyable experience in the future. Sincerely, HIS

First Ever Bus Tour

Barbara_C, Mar 2025
I have traveled solo in different countries and had planned to go to Nikko by train on my own, but decided to try a bus tour. This was my first ever bus tour so I wasn't sure what to expect. Luckily, it was a sunny day. Our meeting spot was the Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture near the Metropolitan government buildings. When I checked in and showed my Viator paid ticket on my phone, the assistant and tour guide could not find my name on their manifest list. I showed them emails confirming my reservation for tour and lunch, and that Viator had already charged my credit card for payment ahead of time. Only after talking to a 3rd person was I approved to board the van. The van was comfortable; the driver was very safe and competent. Our guide, Yasu, was kind to change my seat when I told her that I get motion sickness if I have to sit in the back of a vehicle. A fellow passenger gave me a Dramamine motion sickness pill; I was able to survive the ride to the mountains and back. Yasu gave some introduction to the history of Nikko temple and Ieyasu, the founder; she had a few placards with images and kanji that she held up. The hand-drawn handout depicting the day's agenda using pictures and words was nice--I am a nature journaler, so I appreciate visuals and not just lists. At the temple we were encouraged to explore on our own after some introductions to artifacts, such as the elephant. The assistant Isao, whose English was much better and clearer to understand, did not give any history or introduction to what we were seeing. The only time he spoke to the group was to introduce himself and then to thank everyone at the end of our trip. He did look out for those of us who were slower (I had brought my walking poles and someone with asthma who had to take it easy; and looked for people who didn't come to the bus on time); he chatted with some of us individually too. He explained how these tours are organized through partnerships with different companies and guides. Just before this bus tour I learned that Viator is a Trip Advisor company. I thought we would have lunch at a traditional-style Japanese restaurant; instead we lunched at a fairly large, nondescript place with multiple areas for different tour groups. Fortunately we were seated upstairs away from the other groups, so it was not noisy. We were seated at a long table, each with large round bento bowls and a pot of shared soup for each 2-3 people. Our guide and assistant did not eat with us, saying they had to accompany the driver. The food was tasty and vegetarian, which I appreciated. No one in our group chatted much; we were focused on tasting everything. After lunch we drove to Kegon Falls, seeing patches of snow on the mountains and on the ground as we drove by, taking 43 hairpin turns up, according to Yasu. We looked at the falls for a few minutes from a cold and windy platform. On our drive down the mountains back to Shinjuku, Tokyo, I mentioned to Isao and Yasu that the Tokyo Night & Light Projection Mapping Project would be on display, so she announced it to fellow passengers. ( I was the only one who walked a couple of blocks to see the display after we disembarked.) Our group was fairly international. Yasu was gracious and frequently thanked people for visiting Japan and coming on the World Heritage 1 day tour. On the ground, I did not observe her interacting individually with tour guests, as Isao did. He seemed much more at ease chatting with guests. The driver did not speak with any guests, but focused on her job, which for a 11 hour day must have been very tiring for her. (She was on the bus with engine on by 8:15 and dropped us off in Tokyo around 7 pm. Some recommendations: (1) ask the driver not to run the gas-engine of the van for such a long time waiting for everyone to board in the morning--that pollutes the air. (2) Besides introducing themselves (guide, assistant, driver), ask each guest to say their name and where they are from, to foster a little camaraderie among passengers. For anyone wanting to experience Nikko temple and its history more deeply and to explore the town, overnight stays would support that desire. Although I chose not to exercise this option, the flexibility of this trip is another positive aspect--Yasu told us early on that we had the option of leaving the group and staying longer in Nikko, as long as we told her. Bottom line: for people wanting an introduction to this historic temple, the Viator Nikko World Heritage 1-Day Guided Tour provides a viable opportunity.

Response from Host, Mar 2025

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed and thoughtful review of our Nikko World Heritage 1 Day Tour. We truly appreciate your feedback and are delighted that you found the tour to be a viable introduction to Nikko's historic sites. We are also pleased you enjoyed the bento lunch and the scenic views of Kegon Falls. We apologize for the initial confusion regarding your booking and the delay in confirming your reservation. We will review our communication protocols with Viator and our on-site team to prevent similar issues from occurring. We are glad to hear that Yasu was accommodating in changing your seat and that you appreciated her introduction to Nikko's history and Ieyasu. We will pass along your compliments about the hand-drawn handout, as we strive to provide informative and visually appealing materials. We acknowledge your feedback regarding Isao's interaction with the group. We are pleased he was helpful in assisting those who needed extra support and that his individual interactions were appreciated. We will encourage him to share more historical insights with the group during the tour. We will also address the observation that Yasu did not interact individually with tour guests and encourage her to do so. Regarding the lunch venue, we understand your expectation of a traditional Japanese restaurant. We select our lunch locations based on their ability to accommodate our tour groups efficiently while providing a quality meal. We appreciate your positive comments about the taste and vegetarian options. Your recommendations are valuable and will be carefully considered: Engine Idling: We will remind our drivers to minimize engine idling to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Guest Introductions: We agree that fostering camaraderie among our guests is important. We will explore incorporating guest introductions at the beginning of the tour. Overnight Stay Recommendation: We appreciate you highlighting the option for guests to extend their stay in Nikko for a more in-depth experience. We are pleased that you recognized the driver's competence and Yasu's graciousness in thanking our international guests. We are also glad you were able to share your knowledge about the Tokyo Night & Light Projection Mapping Project with the group. We are committed to providing our guests with memorable and enriching experiences. Your feedback helps us to continuously improve our tours. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. Sincerely,

Enjoy a Day of a Perfect Blend of History, Nature, and Culture!

Ala_E, Jan 2025
We took this tour of the Nikko region with HIS, and it turned out to be truly a very memorable experience. Despite the cold January weather, the sun was shining, making the day crisp but beautiful. The highlight was visiting Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The shrine’s intricate carvings and rich history, not to forget the shoguns final resting place, offered a deep dive into the legacy of the Tokugawa shogunate. Our guide, Nozomi, was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, sharing fascinating insights into the history and symbolism of the site. She was accompanied by her equally engaging assistant, who ensured everything ran smoothly and provided additional support. Midway through the tour, we enjoyed a delicious traditional Japanese lunch, which was the perfect break—fresh, flavorful, and full of variety. The tour also included a visit to the stunning 100-meters high Kegon Falls, which was equally impressive. The towering waterfall, surrounded by snow-covered greenery, was a stunning contrast to the historical sites we witnessed earlier. Overall, the tours combination of cultural history, exposure to natural beauty and engaging interaction with the ever lively Nozomi-San made this trip a perfect balance of education and relaxation. Highly recommend for anyone interested in Japan’s heritage and stunning natural beauty.

Stunning Nikko

RobertC_D, Nov 2024
The Nikko Shrine is stunning and the tour itself was smooth and enjoyable. It was difficult to hear the tour guide at points, however she was friendly and professional throughout. We would highly recommend this tour. Nikko itself is so perfect that it transcends the need for words.
