Being able to see the stars from the top of Mt. John was absolutely worth it. Andy showed us how to find some of the constellations, and even the pictures I took with my phone were excellent. Being able to use high powered telescopes was really cool (especially since knowledgeable people at them up), and seeing the belts on Jupiter was really cool!

This was an amazing experience!! Highly recommend. Got to look up at the sky with our bare eyes and also with some powerful telescopes. It was so cool and very accessible to people who don’t know much about stars. I believe our guides were named Kieran, Alice, and Olive - they were wonderful.

Try and score a new moon night for the best experience!

    Dhruva_G, May 2026
Most importantly, depending on what you want to see, make a booking by checking the Lunar calendar. We went on almost a full moon night and got to see various features of the moon. But a new moon would have been better. Nonetheless, the guides were super informative, we were provided with cold weather jackets as well. We were shown various constellations and got to view star clusters out of 4 different types of telescopes. Overall, I think I’d just want to do the whole experience again on a new moon night.

An experience I would like to repeat.

    JC_K, Apr 2026
Due to cloud covering, its not guarenteed that any stars could be seen. Which was what happened to us. But it was good of the supplier to refund half of the ticket costs due to the weather.

    Excellent tour weather dependent

    Clint_J, Apr 2026
This tour is weather dependent. However so long as weather is good, this is an excellent tour. Bring warm clothes but be aware that they will also provide you with heavy jackets

This Mount Cook Observatory tour was absolutely phenomenal and one of the highlights of my trip. The experience opened my eyes to the beauty of the night sky and helped me learn so much more about the stars, the moon, and other celestial objects. The guide explained everything in a very clear and engaging way, making it easy to understand even if you’re new to astronomy. Seeing the stars so clearly in such a dark sky was truly breathtaking. The equipment provided was great, and the overall atmosphere made the experience even more special. It’s not just a tour—it’s an educational and memorable journey into space. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Mount Cook. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

    Stunning display of stars!

    Natalie_C, Feb 2026
Stunning display of stars - even in a cloudy night. The tour had to be adjusted to the crater tour option due to high winds but it was terrific anyway. The guides were enthusiastic and informative. My only concern was that they had to keep reminding people not to use the white light/flashlight on their phones. How hard is it to follow that simple direction, people? Highly recommend this experience!

    Can miss Lake Tekapo experience!

Great tour with knowledgeable guides who were very enthusiastic, entertaining and engaging. I learned quite a bit too.

Unfortunately the experience was cancelled because of cloud cover. We were unlucky, but that’s the luck of the draw. No one is to blame.

It was cloudy. Therefore, it was cancelled. And while that’s out of their control, they offered an indoor experience which was uninformative and unimpressive.

    Informative and fun

    Kathy_B, Mar 2025
This is a great tour for stargazing novices. We learned about the major constellations and stars and got to see several different types of astral marvels (the moons of Jupiter, a cluster of stars from just after the Big Bang, a group of new stars, and the surface of the moon). The guides were informative and could answer a range of questions from explaining the impact of satellites on scientific research to addressing skepticism about the moon landing. And they thoughtfully provide warm jackets so we could be comfortable!

Enthusiastic Guide who worked around the clouds to show us most of the night sky as the clouds moved and shifted.

    anthouard, Feb 2025
Even though it was cloudy we were able to get a good view of different stars and constellations including the Southern Cross, the fake southern star and learned how to identify the true southern star. We were also able to use 3 of the telescopes and were able to see the Tarantula Nebula and see stars being born. I felt the group size was too large for each participant to fully take advantage of the telescopes and had hoped to be able to take photos using the telescopes.

    Must-Do!

    Kim_J, Dec 2024
This is a “must-do” while at Lake Tekapo! Very knowledgeable staff and plenty of time to explore the galaxy through all three telescopes. One of the top experiences in New Zealand!

    EMILIA_L, Dec 2024
We went in November (Spring) and it is still freezing when you go up so make sure you wear layers. They do provide you with a big red weather coat though. It was really dark as well so it was a little difficult to see where you are walking so make sure you stay close to the guide and your group as you’re not allowed to use any white light/torches.

If you have a passing interest in the night sky, then this is a must.

    Noel_D, Sep 2024
If you have a passing interest in the night sky, then this is a must. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable. The tout of the night sky was informative, fun and the views breat Kitted out with EWC ( Extreme Weather Coats) we were wrapped up warm against the elements, the location was sheltered from the wind. the telescopes were staffed by extremely knowledgeable staff, who were more than happy to explain the basic and complex. The setting with mountains all around with stars, planets and the Milky Way over head was breathtaking

    Wonderful Stars!

    Chinatsu_F, Sep 2024
I had a good experience to exploring stars. At first I requested an English tour, but they changed into Japanese tour quickely! Our guide was so nice, she has a lots of knowledge and I learned about southern sky stars.

    Light years away !

    Warren_S, Nov 2021
Had a great time up at Mount John Observatory. Our guide and other astronomers were very informative and I think everyone learnt a thing or two about our solar system.

    Mt John in September

    Peter_G, Sep 2021
Most interesting experience. We had to wait an extra nights to go up, as weather was cloudy. The ground crew were very informative, with the situation. The crew on the mountain were fantastic, with their knowledge. Apart from the cold, we were warned, it was great. I would do it again in warmer times, without a full moon, so we could better see the Milky Way.

Just the best star gazing experience

    andymcl1, Jan 2020
This was an amazing experience. I have been a keen star gazer for many years but have never seen a dark sky like this one before. There were three experts on hand who were well qualified and showed me things that I did not know.

    It was alright

    Daphne_B, Jun 2019
The guides were friendly enough. Tour was crowded and I've had better stargazing. Apparently if there is ANY wind at all, they won't take pictures for you on your camera. We were fortunate to be up there on a fairly still night. Coats provided are nice and warm.
