A must do when in Derry.
We had the absolute pleasure of having Jimmy Toye take us on this heart rendering tour of the Bogside talking about the troubles and Bloody Sunday. He made us laugh and also cry telling us from his first hand experience of many years as a teenager living during those terrible times.
Was one of the best history lesson ever and a must if you visit Derry.
Hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to get Jimmy.

I was looking forward to this tour and learning more about the events and see the sights. I found the guide cold unwelcoming and not very engaging with the group. I’ve done many walking tours across the world and there is usually time for questions and short discussion but the guide just spewed out information in a very matter of fact way like he was in a rush and wasn’t that interested in his guests. Whilst I appreciated the locations and very basic information given I felt the guide could have been more engaging with the group. If you want people to have a positive experience and leave happy then please consider this feedback.

This is a great way to learn about the tragic events of Bloody Sunday and the Troubles from a guide with firsthand experience. He was personable and told stories with humor despite the horrible circumstances. We learned a lot and were so glad we took the tour.

It’s about 2 hours, not 1. Lovely experience to learn about the city’s history. It’s enriching to learn from personal experiences from our tour guide, John. He gave such a detailed explanation of everything on our walk and was such a lovely spirit. He made our one day in Derry worthwhile.

The tour guide left us after first bathroom stop ! Couldn’t find him at all. Basically no tour. !!! Don’t waste you money

We just finished an incredible walking tour with John. We had a small group, which allowed for a very intimate and informative (not to mention personalized) tour experience. Not only was John incredibly warm and informative, but he shared such powerful personal details throughout the tour which really underscored the gravity of Derry's living history. We soaked up every anecdote and fact, and would have continued following him around town long after the tour ended, if it wouldn't have been weird! While we were only in Derry for less than 24 hours, this tour made such a lasting impact. John's sense of humour, obvious community connections (he knew everyone!), his empathy, and his earnest desire to share Derry's truth made this truly a 10/10 visitor experience. Thanks, John!

McCrea is an excellent and very knowledgeable guide. His personal experience is interesting to hear.

Being from the Republic and my girlfriend from Australia whose dad was in the British Army at a later period, this was an informative, moving and heartfelt tour through the Bogside.
Couldn’t recommend John the tour guide enough- we really appreciated his candour and professionalism when sharing his personal experiences from The Troubles.
We also enjoyed his light humour to balance out the heavy themes of the tour! Thank you John 😊

Very fortunate to have Jimmy Toye as our guide. Very grateful and humbled to hear his personal account of the attrocity on Bloody Sunday.
It was deeply insightful, very factual and helped spell out in very human terms historical events and the deep pain they left both on the immediate community and the impact it would go on to leave on wider society.

Incredible and devastating.
Jimmy Toye is such an unbelievable resource to have and listen to.
Hearing the story of Bloody Sunday and the Battle of Bogside at large from the mouth of someone who actually experienced it and was shaped by it was the best kind of history lesson we could’ve asked for.
I would highly highly recommend doing this tour and if he’s available, do your best to get Jimmy!
Thanks for an amazing tour and thank you Jimmy!

Our tour guide mccrean provided a wealth of knowledge and good humour throughout. Brought the story to life and would highly recommend. Really added to our trip to free Derry....and this is coming from a protestant (I jest). Excellent stuff

We had a personal tour with an educated guide who had experienced the troubles first hand. Mc Craig was informative and passionate. We would recommend the tour to others.

Paul was Fantastic, so funny and knowledgeable my wife and children learnt so much about the history and that is what i was hoping for as i know about the history from my Mom who was Irish and grew up in Belfast. Highly recommend this tour especially with Paul given his personal connection to the issues of the past
Many Thanks again Paul Regards Mick O'Brien

Tour Guide (Paul) never showed. Messaged him & Viator through the Viator app. He replied 5 hours later and used vulgar and abusive language. I have filed a complaint with Viator.

The instructions about where to meet were a bit vague -although we found our guide eventually.
It was a great tour - full of interesting facts .

Our tour guy Jimmy Toye was a fantastic source of information since he was participant on the Derry riots that ended with the sadly event of Bloody Sunday.
He described the events in such a way that made you feel that you were there as well. He took the time to answer all our question and clarify the doubts. He was very friendly with everyone and appreciated that we wanted to learn about Derry history.

Paul, our guide, led us on an extraordinary glimpse into the tragic events that unfolded in the Bogside. A very memorable tour.

Neil was an excellent guide. Everything he said was interesting and from the heart. We could tell that he was talking from personal experience. He was also very kind and considerate. There was a young disabled woman in a wheelchair and he did everything he could to accommodate her. Honestly, Neil is great!!!

Jimmy Toye gave us an amazing first-hand account of his experiences growing up in the Bogside, Bloody Sunday and the events leading up to it. Jimmy is full of amazing stories, both hilarious and tragic. I couldn’t recommend this tour enough, especially to mainland Brits who unfortunately are not taught in school about what our country has done on the island of Ireland.
Jennifer_K, May 2024
This was the absolute best part of our trip to Ireland. Jim Toye took us on an amazing and moving tour while sharing with us his recount of what he lived through on Bloody Sunday and the Troubles. A great value for an invaluable lesson in history.
Sebastien_P, May 2024
Great way to discover the recent history of Derry and Bloody Sunday, with an experienced guide who is the owner of the tour company, and who will give you a nice taste of the "Derry girls" accent.
Emma_G, May 2024
Very good walking tour by someone that lived it: not the most impartial guide but you'll definitely have an authentic and passionate experience with him. Not a long walk (very accessible), lots of stories and anecdotes told.
Definitely cheaper than the other tours, so very good value for money
Very recommended!

Macrea knew his stuff, answered many questions from the 10-11 people on this tour and was an absolute gent. Very informative with lived experience re the Battle of the Bogside and Bloody Sunday. Great tour at a great price for 70-90 minutes.
Margaret_C, Mar 2024
It was wonderful to be educated on the history of Bogside by Jimmy Toye who was actually one of the youths ( at the time) involved in the Bogside events and knew of things first hand. His tour was very educational and enlightening and I left feeling I was a more knowledgeable person not just about the events but the experiences of the people of Bogside who lived through it. I would thoroughly recommend this tour.
Tanya_H, Oct 2023
We took the big side tour and enjoyed the great murals created to celebrate the end of the troubles. Our guide was very knowledgeable however we had one major issue. He was not able to speak loud enough that we could hear him. Though he seemed to be quite knowledgeable and well informed we got almost none of his information due to being unable to hear him. We would suggest he use some type of microphone system with a speaker as we have seen some guides use effectively.
Tim_O, Oct 2023
Paul was an outstanding tour guide. His personal experience brought everything to life with knowledge, perspective and candour.
