We only had time for a stop at the marble mountains, coconut bay and hoi ann. Our guide was very young (she had just completed her university studies but had never been outside Vietnam). She spoke very good English and had a wide vocabulary. What she lacked was experience. For example, a stop should be planned to enjoy the view from the cloud pass. A background on Vietnam, its culture and its people was missing. She could not really explain to us what generated revenues for the country. She had no idea about the importance of coal to the economy. She could speak directly about the items she led us to but wider knowledge was limited (e.g., economy, politics). Most disappointing was lunch. While there were many restaurants which appeared somewhat inviting, she led us to one with a few tables in what appeared to be an alley. The mistakes we made (1) we visited the restroom which was (politely put) not clean but, even worse provided us with a view of the area where the food was prepared. Calling this a kitchen would be an overstatement. (2) I asked what some of the items on my plate were which I could not identify. The response: chicken intestines and chicken blood!

We had a wonderful day with Roy. He showed us a good time. The only complaint is that we were taken to a silk shopping store and a marble shopping store. We did not want to go to these shopping sites and we felt pressured to buy.
