Your tour will begin about 15 minutes after your ship docks. This allows time for you to disembark and meet your guide. For example, if your ship arrives at 8:00 am, the tour starts at 8:15 am (or sooner if everyone is ready). If your ship arrives at 9:00 am, the tour begins at 9:15 am, and so on. Because ship arrival times can vary, we do not print exact tour times on tickets. If a ticket shows a specific time, please ignore it—your guide will always be waiting when you arrive. We ask that you disembark as soon as possible so the group is not delayed. If all guests are not present within 30 minutes of docking, the tour will begin without them. Your guide will be wearing a blue shirt or jacket and parked close to your ship, usually between the ship and the large buses. If you are unsure, ask someone to point you toward Cabot Discovery Tours—people are generally happy to direct you. There are two docks at the Port of Sydney. We will pick you up at whichever dock your ship uses. If you arrive at Liberty Pier, someone may try to direct you to the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion at the Main Dock. Please do not take the shuttle—your guide will be waiting for you at Liberty Pier. This is an all-weather tour. We run rain or shine and cannot guarantee clear skies or views, though we do adjust plans when possible. The only reason a tour would be canceled is if your ship is unable to dock. If your ship docks, the tour will go ahead as scheduled.

Brian is the best!

Cindy_N, Sep 2025
We have been on 20+ cruises and we can say that this excursion was the best of all excursions we have taken. Our guide, Brian, was so knowledgeable of the area, took us to little out of the way places that the big buses can’t get to, stopped at a local restaurant that won an award for their chowder and had many stories to share about the area. He was also very funny - typical east coast charm! He kept an eye on the time to ensure that our group of 11 got back in plenty of time to board our ships. Highly recommend this tour!

Do your homework!

Landra_D, Sep 2025
We loved the tour and found our guide to be very interesting and knowledgeable. But before you book, know that this is a lot of riding and looking with little to "explore." It was perfect for us, but I can see that a much younger clientele might not enjoy this tour as much as we did.

Great tour

Diane_W, Sep 2025
The tour was very organized and Brian was so friendly and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the experience of seeing the island.

When I booked the tour...

Kellianne_M, Sep 2025
When I booked the tour for 6 people (and spoke to someone at the company), I was given the impression that we would be the only ones on the tour. When we arrived the van was filled to the brim and there really was not enough room for 14 large adults. The driver said we would drive their the mick mau reservation, but that never happened. Thought we would drive to the top but was told it was too much traffice. Driver was knowledgeable but told TOO many stories about himself and did not really create a dialogue with the riders.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Hi Kelli, Thank you for your feedback on your tour. Unfortunately, we didn't speak to you directly before you booked the tour as we would have given you the correct information. You spoke to an agent at the Viator call centre who apparently was misinformed. I remember your booking specifically because generally tours booked through Viator come to us for authorization so that we can avoid crowding but your tour was booked without us approving it. So, I agree, we ended up with a full van and this is not our ideal. When you did reach out to me through the messaging app just before the tour, I did inform you that the tour was full with 14 guests to make you aware of this before you arrived. I would also point out that you did book our Shared Cruise Excursion, and it is clear in the description that it is shared and not a private tour. The tour description clearly indicates that 14 is the maximum number of passengers. I am not sure what 'mick mau' means so I can't address this specifically, but I do see that you mention not being able to go to 'the top' due to traffic. Again, I am unsure of what this refers to but our guides are sensitive to the timing as they need to ensure passengers are back to the ship on time. I am glad to know that this was the guides priority and he wasn't taking any chances with your group. This is a common challenge with cruise ship excursions as they run on the ship's timeline rather than ours and so we aren't always able to show our guests as much as we would like them to see. Our goal is that guests have a great experience on our tours and we pay attention if we fall short of this. I am sorry that your expectation for the day was different from what this tour offered and do hope that the remainder of your cruise was enjoyable.

Helga_A, Sep 2025
Our tour guide was terrific. He gave us lots of history of the area we were traveling plus history of the Sydney area

Not much to see in this abbreviated tour

Robert_C, Sep 2025
My wife and I were looking forward to seeing some great views of the Cabot Trail, but unfortunately this was not the right tour for that. Our driver, Frank, was very nice and a native of the area. That being said, his narration was more personal—reminiscing about his family and work in the coal mines—rather than focused on the history and culture of the region. Time was also poorly managed, with no clear expectations set for when passengers needed to be back on the bus. What was supposed to be a quick “grab-and-go” sandwich stop turned into a 35-minute sit-down meal. There were also two lengthy bathroom breaks. Altogether, these delays ate up more than two hours of the tour. Despite the setbacks, I understood that the full loop could typically be accomplished in 4–5 hours, which should have been plenty of time within the seven hours scheduled for this tour. Instead, we made it less than halfway through the trail before having to turn back for the cruise port. The result was seeing only 4–5 overlooks that were nice, but not breathtaking. I should mention that many of the older passengers seemed to enjoy themselves, treating it more as a social outing than a sightseeing tour. With that in mind, if you’re a younger traveler hoping to see dramatic views and learn more about the area’s culture and history, I think there are better options available. If you’re older and looking for a leisurely ride with fellow cruisers, however, this tour might be more your cup of tea.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Hi Robert, Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to leave your review. I have to agree that taking this tour on a shore excursion doesn't allow for the full Cabot Trail experience that you were seeking. It is true that it takes 4 to 5 hours to complete the Cabot Trail if you made no stops at all, but then you have an additional two hours of driving between the Cabot Trail and Sydney to also consider in the timing. Most folks do wish to stop, enjoy the scenery, have some time to eat, and need washroom breaks so I am happy to know that Frank provided these opportunities for our guests. With our shared cruise excursions, we do have to limit the time and therefore the route, to allow the time for stops and ensure that our guests are back at the ship with time to spare. We don't take any chances with this and so we don't offer a full Cabot Trail Tour for the cruise ship tours. I invite you and your wife to come back and see us again. Plan to spend at least three nights in Cape Breton and we will be able to show you some dramatic views, East Coast hospitality, and tons of our history and culture. Frank's experience as a coal miner definitely is a first-hand account of part of the history and culture of this island, and guests generally do enjoy hearing about the lived experiences from local guides. There is a lot more to see and learn about the history of the area and we would love the opportunity to share it with you.

Great tour! Will book again with Viator!

Karen_C, Sep 2025
Great personalized experience. Van accommodated 14 people but we only had 12 which made it less cramped.

Mini Cabot trail excursion

Deborah_H, Sep 2025
This is an excellent small group tour of part of the Cabot Trail, with gorgeous scenic, beauty and really interesting history and culture. Frank, our tour guide, was super. He conveyed his deep love for the region to us and was very happy to answer all questions we had. We really liked him very much.

Overview Cape Breton

Anonymous, Aug 2025
Met us at the terminal, easy to find. Minivan bit crowded, you would need to be able to climb in and out without assistance. Tour was great, Brian was exceptional. His commentary was right on. Stops were great, shot wonderful pics of the area. Highlight was our visit to the Cape Breton National Park, our 1st National Park visit for Canada. Only suggestion I had would be a quick stop at the Parks Visitor Center in the future.

Deborah_B, Aug 2025
The drive was informative, beautiful, lots of overlook view stops, and our guide, Frank, was very knowledgeable. Tour goes up the east route of Cabot Trail.

10/10 would travel again

Darcy_C, Jun 2025
Brian was the perfect guide. He had first hand experience that he expertly wove into the history of this beautiful place. He timed the stories perfectly to coincide with the locations we passed. I had misgivings about the long road trip and I was so entertained that it flew by and I was so happy!

Nice chance to send something other than Sydney. Part of Cabot Trail. Our group just 6.

Linda_S, Oct 2024
Taking ferry and seeing bald eagle on this small group tour was very nice. Our guide Brian was super

Great views

What a great tour. Driver was informative, friendly, full of local knowledge. Great photo opportunities. Weather was good.

Tour guide Brian shared...

Timothy_O, Sep 2024
Tour guide Brian shared so much information on the history of the region and the current goings on along the Cabot Trail. He was incredibly kind and personable and informative. The van for 14 was perfect for our total group size of 8 as it felt very comfortable for everyone. It was alot of driving but we were able to be immersed in the beauty of the scenery of the Cabot Trail. I would definitely recommend this excursion for others.

Beautiful Cabot Trail

Ronald_F, Sep 2024
Brian was the best tour guide. Gave us a running commentary from the the start of the tour to the very end. Very informative.

Vibrant colours and vistas of The Cabot Trail is not to be missed

CATHY_D, Oct 2023
We weren't blessed with the best weather but Brian made the tour interesting with his stories and knowledge of Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail. The light rain actually brought out the beautiful fall colours of the trees and he made sure we had enough stops to take photos.

Great Personal Service

LindaSmart, Oct 2023
We booked this excursion as it had everything we wanted to see. Dave was our personal driver, as it was just husband and I as another couple cancelled. Dave was very informative and a pleasure to be with. OK the weather wasn't great but we got all the information we needed and had a great time. So thank you Face #23 4U2 SEA.

Response from Host, Oct 2023

Thank you for choosing us and for your kind words about Dave, your personal driver. We're delighted he provided you with informative and enjoyable company, even on a less-than-perfect weather day. We're thrilled to have met your expectations and that you had a great time. It was our pleasure to have you on board, and we look forward to welcoming you back for more adventures.

Try it, you'll never take another cruise sponsored tour

Francis_N, Oct 2023
Bryan, our guide, was excellent and kept you both informed and entertained for the entire tour. The small group in a comfortable van was much preferred to the large busses offered by the cruise lines, not requiring 15 minutes to exit and re-board at each stop. I took three cruise sponsored tours and two Viator tours during my trip. Both Viator tours far exceeded the value offered by the ship. Two of the ship tours were late departing, thus shortened times at the stops. The cruise tour to Peggy's Cove was late, leaving 25 minutes to see the tour highlight if you skipped the 10 minute wait to use the facilities. Both Viator tours contained many stops for sights and offered rest breaks as needed. I was so disgusted with one cruise sponsored tour that I demanded my money back. Try Viator and you will never take another over priced, over-rated and crowded tour offered by the cruise lines.

Response from Host, Oct 2023

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We're delighted to hear that Bryan provided an excellent, informative, and entertaining tour. We're proud to offer a more intimate and efficient small-group experience, avoiding the long wait times. It's heartening to know that our tour exceeded your expectations and offered better value compared to the ship tours. Your feedback is invaluable, and we're thrilled to have been part of your memorable trip. We look forward to hosting you on more incredible adventures in the future.

Nice but too long

Jan, Oct 2023
Although I gave 3 stars, I would recommend to others who were looking for this type of experience. This was over 7.5 hours in a 15 passenger vehicle, driving up and back into the countryside and along the coast (and the seating was kind of tight). Frank, our guide, was very nice, knowledgeable and informative. No fault of his—I just felt it was too long to be seeing the same views. Lots of getting in the van, out of the van, back in the van, to take photos that looked very similar to the last stop. We shortened our lunch stop in order to have more time on the road! So—understand what this excursion is and you may love it. I saw people nodding off and felt that way, too.

Response from Host, Oct 2023

Thank you for your honest review. We appreciate your feedback and understand that the duration of the tour may not suit everyone. We're pleased to hear that you found Frank nice, knowledgeable, and informative. You point out something that is key - the Cabot Trail is a distance away from the cruise terminal so it makes for a long day. We hope you consider joining us on a different, perhaps shorter, adventure in the future, where you can fully enjoy the experience.

Well worth it, but a long day

Tracy_J, Sep 2023
Brian was an excellent tour guide. We really enjoyed the journey. Simply for awareness people need to be aware this is an out and back tour as there is no way to make a full circle. The trip is worth it, but you are in the van for many hours. However, Brian was good at stopping at many attractive points along the route. We saw beautiful scenery and learned a lot about the area.

Response from Host, Oct 2023

Thank you for your kind words about Brian and your understanding of the tour format. We're delighted that you enjoyed the journey and the stops at attractive points along the way. Cape Breton's beauty is indeed worth the drive, and it's wonderful to hear you found it a worthwhile experience. We hope to welcome you back for more scenic adventures!

Ap Breton Delights

LindaJ_F, Sep 2023
Our guide was knowledgeable, and he shared his affection toward Cape Breton. He had to adjust the trip, because the ship shortened our time in port. We enjoyed our trip, and we especially enjoyed watching a Cormorant leisurely drying his wings.

Response from Host, Oct 2023

Thank you for choosing us despite the time constraints. We're delighted to hear that our guide's knowledge and affection for Cape Breton shone through. Adjusting the trip to fit your schedule is a testament to our commitment to your experience. It's wonderful that you found joy in the simple beauty of watching a Cormorant. We look forward to welcoming you back for more Cape Breton adventures.

Great trip with Frank who did an awesime job maximizing what we saw in our limited time in port. Only complaint was van was cramped.

Unbedingt empfehlenswert!
