Insufficient time in Sheki

I am acutely aware of the impact that not sharing a five star review can have on businesses and people’s livelihoods, but I also think the primary purpose of a review is to be helpful for other travellers. Therefore, I want to be as fair and balanced as possible and don’t like having pressure placed on me to leave a five star review. First, the pros. You definitely get your money’s worth on this trip! You leave at 7am and don’t return to Baku until 10:30pm (at least we didn’t). You get to see amazing scenery along the way and the guides were definitely energetic and enthusiastic. Hats off to the driver who negotiated heavy traffic and a long day of driving. Then the cons. This trip didn’t really deliver what I expected. It was no fault of the guides, just that this tour tries to do too much in too little time! If your focus is to see the sights of Sheki (like mine was), then this trip is NOT for you. There are a lot of stops there and back. You waste an hour having breakfast, an hour having lunch and then stop for baclava, tea and more tea on the way back. More time is spent having tea in the middle of nowhere than free time at the Palace of Sheki Khans and the Caravanserai. The Viator website advertised 90 minutes at each place, but it’s only in retrospect when you realise how far Sheki is from Baku, that this is not possible. We spent 90 minutes in Sheki in total, and we literally had 8 minutes to take photos of the Caravanserai after the information was delivered before being taken to lunch. I had planned on skipping lunch so I would have more time to explore Sheki but sadly this was not possible, as the lunch was in Kiş. The tour was not set up to appropriately accommodate those not wanting to take lunch. We also seemed to waste valuable time dropping off and picking up other guests from some mountain resort, which was odd as it wasn’t snow season. All in all, I found the trip a big investment of time for very little return, given my focus was to take photos of Sheki and soak up the atmosphere. There was nothing inherently wrong with the tour, just make sure it’s what you really want before booking. If your focus is Sheki, I would recommend overnighting in Sheki or hiring a driver so you can tailor the trip to your needs. Other things to note. There was a Russian and English speaking guide. This meant that if we passed places of interest while the Russian guide was talking, the English speaking passengers missed out on the explanation. I would also suggest that there be less talking. It’s a fine balance between providing targeted impactful information and talking for the sake of it. Maybe I was just grumpy because my partner got food poisoning the night before and wasn’t able to join me on the trip. One final observation - another passenger had motion sickness and asked to sit in the front seat. This request was denied. I thought this demonstrated a lack of flexibility and appreciation for the passenger’s situation and the impact that a sick passenger can have on other passengers.
