This experience was really magical, exceeding expectations in every way. The staff was extremely capable, friendly, articulate, and funny. We learned a lot and saw something extraordinary all while getting a great twilight excursion on kayaks. I can’t recommend them enough, especially Pedro who led the excursion and provided clear and detailed information about how bioluminescence works.

I would say the trip to and fro was worth it. We booked the 6.30 PM tour and I would add that it was well organized. They even safekept our belongings (Kay keys, etc.) for us. Provided light snack at the end. With our team. 4 or 5 of them rode the kayaks to help us where people would get stuck on a mangrove root or went sideways. The kayaks were good quality and nothing to complain. Well you will get a lot of see weed into your kayak while paddling (no escaping that).
We were able to observe the colors but they were very light but observable with the naked eyes. Capturing them with a phone camera was not possible however all of us saw luminescence with our eyes. They explained how the phenomenon occurs scientifically and guided throughout the ride. We came a couple of hours early and whilst went into a small restaurant until time arrived. Some would say that in Fajardo, english may not be as popular as in San Juan (specially in small restaurants). Have some cash at hand, because not all the restaurants may accept cards (especially amex).

This tour was beautiful! The scenery to the bay was something I wish I enjoyed in the daylight, super picturesque! Pedro was our tour guide and he was super funny and attentive. Jesus victor and Gabriel were all super friendly and helped us all as we were crashing into each other lol. The bad part about the tour was we really didn’t see any light and this isn’t the tour that you can get in the water and all other tours happen at the same time so there are about 80 kayaks in the water at the same time doing single file lines which was a bit aggravating due to the river trail being so small before getting to the actual bay. Other than that great time!!
Response from Host, May 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so happy to hear you enjoyed the beauty of the mangroves and lagoon, and that Pedro, Jesús, Victor, and Gabriel helped make the adventure fun and memorable. We’ll be sure to share your kind words with the team!
The nighttime scenery through the mangrove channel is definitely a special part of the experience, and many guests say they’re surprised by how peaceful and picturesque the route is, even in the dark.
We also appreciate your honest feedback regarding the bioluminescence visibility and traffic on the water. Since this is a natural phenomenon, brightness levels can vary nightly depending on conditions such as moonlight, tides, weather, and overall water conditions. During nights with more ambient light, the glow can appear more subtle than some guests expect.
As for the activity on the channel, Laguna Grande is a shared natural area with multiple licensed tour operators, especially during busy evenings. The single file navigation is required for safety and environmental protection while traveling through the narrow mangrove trail. While it can occasionally feel busy, our guides work hard to keep the group organized, assist guests when needed, and make the journey as enjoyable as possible.
Thank you again for joining us and for recognizing the effort of our crew. We’re glad that despite the natural limitations of the night, you still had a great time with us at Island Kayaking Adventure

Didn’t see bioluminescence but at the end of the day it was a great nighttime kayak adventure under the stars
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Hi Matt,
Thank you for your 4 star review and for sharing your experience. We are glad you enjoyed the nighttime kayak under the stars. That is a special part of the tour.
Bioluminescence levels can vary from night to night depending on natural conditions like moonlight, tides, and water movement, and on some evenings it can appear more subtle.
We appreciate your feedback and hope to have you back on the water with us again.

Joann_W, Apr 2026
The kayak ride out and back was awesome, the luminescent part was disapointing, not what I expected. Has very little room in between kayaks to swipe the water to see it.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Hi Joann,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are glad you enjoyed the kayak ride out and back. That is an important part of the adventure.
We understand the bioluminescence did not meet your expectations. This is a natural phenomenon and its brightness changes from night to night based on conditions like moonlight, tides, and weather.
In the lagoon, kayaks are grouped to keep everyone together and organized. This helps you follow your guide, enjoy the interpretive talk, and focus on the bioluminescence without drifting with the current.
We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you again under different conditions.

Lisa_N, Apr 2026
The Good-The guides were great. They looked after their group well and helped them if needed.
The Bad-The kayak trip was down a narrow creek with MANY fellow kayakers going in both directions. So if you are not great and practiced with kayaker, you will turn sideways in creek blocking creek. Plus should the water was only 3'-4' deep. So I kept hitting root covered bottom of creek.
When we finally got to the bay, the guides gave us a tarp to place over our heads in the kayaks and asked us to put our hand in the water to see the bioluminescent. There were very small little bioluminescent material. Plus the kayaks were placed side by side. So placing your hand in the water was difficult.
Overall the trip was not worth it. It was a lot of work rowing out to the bay just to see very little luminescence.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thank you for your feedback and for your kind words about our guides; we’re glad to hear they took good care of the group.
We’re sorry to hear the experience didn’t fully meet your expectations. As mentioned at the time of booking, bioluminescence can vary depending on natural conditions and may appear as subtle sparkles or a stronger glow. The tarp is also part of the experience, used to help block surrounding light and enhance visibility when needed.
This is a guided adventure in a natural environment, and paddling through the mangrove channel is part of the journey. Conditions such as water depth, currents, and traffic can vary from night to night, and our guides are always there to assist whenever needed.
We truly appreciate you joining us and sharing your experience.

Outstanding activity, beautiful lagoon, expert guides. I wish it would have been clearer to bring a change of clothes because you walk into the water to get into the kayaks, you must have shoes that can get wet, and less talking and more paddling ground the bay as the main event. Overall, really wonderful experience.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thank you for your kind words!
We’re so glad you enjoyed the experience, the lagoon, and the work of our guides; it means a lot to our team.
We also appreciate your feedback regarding bringing a change of clothes and appropriate footwear. Thank you for pointing this out; we have reviewed this advisory with Viator/Tripadvisor to ensure it is clearly communicated to all guests prior to arrival.
Regarding the pacing of the tour, we aim to balance guidance, safety, and sharing information about the ecosystem while ensuring guests enjoy their time in the lagoon. We appreciate your perspective and will continue refining that balance.
Thank you again for joining us; we’re glad you had a wonderful experience and hope to see you again!

Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re really happy to hear you had a great experience and that our team made a positive impression.
We’re also glad you found the small details helpful, like the storage for belongings and bug spray, since we know those can make the adventure more comfortable.
It means a lot that you would recommend us, and we truly appreciate you choosing to kayak with us. We hope to welcome you back again in the future!

We enjoyed the kayaking and the night trip.
However, we saw very little bioluminescent algae. We were expecting it to be much more than what we actually saw. We came from over an hour a way, we hoped to see more and were disappointed in what we actually got to see.
Our guides were incredibly helpful and super nice. We enjoyed going down the mangroves and experiencing the whole trip.
Here is my honest opinion. If you are close by and are looking for something fun and unique, then absolutely go. You will enjoy it, as long as you are not expecting to see what pictures show on the internet show. If you are farther away and it is going to cost you a lot to get there, then you decide if it is worth it. Overall, great experience, but not cost worthy from a distance and not for WOW experience.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and honest review, Shannon.
We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the kayaking experience through the mangroves and that our guides made the trip enjoyable and supportive along the way. That night paddle through the mangrove channel is truly a special part of the adventure.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, and its brightness can vary from night to night depending on environmental factors such as moonlight, currents, nutrients, temperature, and salinity. Some nights produce a strong glow, while other nights appear as more subtle sparkles in the water.
Thank you again for joining us and for taking the time to share your experience.

Simple check in process. Friendly staff and attentive to needs of customers. Provided great history. This is not the first experience because we just live the bioluminescent bays and the whole kayaking through the mangrove experience! Do not leave Puerto Rico without experiencing it!
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience, Jennifer!
We’re very happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour, the mangrove channel, and the opportunity to experience the bioluminescent bay again. It means a lot to us that you highlighted the check-in process, the friendliness of our team, and the information shared during the trip.
Kayaking through the mangroves at night and witnessing the bioluminescence truly is a special part of Puerto Rico, and we’re glad you felt it was a must do experience while visiting the island.
We appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again on your next visit!

Paul_B, Mar 2026
Tour guides were great and knowledgeable. However, I think all kayakers should have been issued headlamps or told bring headlamps
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Paul. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour and found our guides knowledgeable.
Regarding the use of lights, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) requires that only the guides carry lights during the tour. Since the lagoon is a protected natural reserve, minimizing artificial light helps avoid disturbing the wildlife and preserves the natural nighttime environment. Guides use their lights only when necessary, mainly for safety or emergency situations.
We appreciate your suggestion and your visit, and we’re glad you were able to enjoy the experience with us. We hope to see you again on another adventure!

Probably better without the moon, but I’ve seen far better in New England and the PNW/BC. Chaotic & crowded too. Big disappointment for me. Our viewing consisted of pulling a plastic tarp over our collective heads and splashing water around for ~5 minutes, then heading back.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback and for joining us. We’re sorry to hear the experience did not meet your expectations. Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that varies nightly depending on factors such as moonlight, water movement, temperature, and other environmental conditions. When there is ambient light, our guides may use a tarp to create a darker space so guests can better observe the glow present in the water. The lagoon is also a shared natural area used by several tour operators, which can make it feel busy at times. We appreciate you giving the experience a try and value your feedback.

It was amazing!! Great staff and the kayaking wasn’t too hard. The bioluminescent water was beautiful ( not peak season but we were still able to see it !!)
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad you enjoyed the adventure and that our team helped make it a fun and comfortable night on the water. We truly appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again on another adventure in Puerto Rico!

We had such a great time doing this tour! It is important to come in prepared that this is not a small group activity where you bond with nature- there are TONS of groups doing the same thing at the same time. I knew this going in so was not disappointed, just need some expectation management. The kayaking portion was smooth and easy. I didn’t realize how many people just don’t know how to kayak, but our guide was patient with all of them. He did a great job explaining things, gave a really nice talk about the science, and then we covered our kayaks with tarps to maximize the effect. It was beyond our expectations!! I was stunned at how cool the bioluminescence was. All of my friends were giddy with it. We had a great time!!
Bring bug spray and prepare to get wet!
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful review! We’re really happy to hear that the experience exceeded your expectations and that you had such a great time on the water.
Laguna Grande is a shared natural area where several tour operators launch during the same time window, so we always appreciate guests who come prepared with that expectation. We’re glad the kayaking felt smooth and that your guide was able to help everyone feel comfortable along the way.
It’s also great to hear that you enjoyed the science explanation and the moment in the lagoon. When conditions allow, using the tarp helps create a darker space so guests can better appreciate the bioluminescence that nature offers that night.
Thank you again for joining us and getting ready to get wet; it’s definitely part of the adventure! We hope to see you again on another visit to Puerto Rico.

It was enjoyable kayaking by moonlight. But I was greatly disappointed at what I thought we would see in the bay. Just a few sparkles when you splashed your hand in the water. Too expensive of a trip for some sparkling
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the nighttime kayaking experience.
Bioluminescence in the lagoon can vary from night to night, from faint sparkles to a brighter glow, depending on natural factors such as moonlight, water conditions, temperature, and other environmental elements. Because it’s a natural phenomenon, brightness levels can’t be guaranteed.
Even when the glow is subtle, our goal is to help guests experience the lagoon in the best way nature allows that evening. We truly appreciate you joining us and sharing your thoughts.

It was fun, but would be hard for inexperienced kayakers. It was pitch dark and sometimes tree branches get in the way which would hit you in the face.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your experience.
Night kayaking can definitely feel more adventurous, especially for first time paddlers. The mangrove channel is natural and unlit, which is part of what makes the experience unique; but it can also mean brushing past branches along the way.
Our guides are always positioned throughout the group to assist and help everyone navigate safely, and we provide a full safety and paddling briefing before departure. We’re glad to hear you still had fun and appreciate you pointing out that it can feel more challenging for beginners.
Thank you again for joining us!

My husband hurt his back a couple hours before the trip. I asked if we could reschedule as we couldn’t make it that night. They didn’t provide a new time and refused to give a refund unless we provided medical documentation. This was a reocurring injury and didn’t need immediate hospitalization. Any medical docs we had for this injury would need to be faxed from the US and that would be highly invasive and we don’t feel comfortable sharing that. Very poor customer service!!! Go with another group!
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Hello Kristen,
We are truly sorry you were unable to join us.
As clearly stated on Viator and TripAdvisor at the time of booking, participation is not allowed for guests with neck or back conditions. These safety restrictions are in place to protect all participants during a nighttime kayaking experience that requires upper body strength and stability.
While we understand that situations can arise unexpectedly, medical conditions are personal and not something we can anticipate unless disclosed in advance. For this reason, we rely on guests to carefully review the participation guidelines prior to booking.
Because the request to reschedule was made only a few hours before departure, and the tour was fully sold out at that time, we were unable to offer an alternative time. The subsequent refund request also fell outside of our same-day cancellation policy.
Each reservation secures exclusive spots that are no longer available to other guests. For this reason, our cancellation policy must be applied consistently to ensure fairness to both our staff and all travelers.
When exceptions are requested due to medical emergencies, we are always willing to review supporting documentation for refund consideration through Viator. This request is not intended to be invasive but to ensure fairness and consistency for all travelers, as many guests request similar exceptions.
Safety, transparency, and equal application of our policies are extremely important to us.
We genuinely wish your husband a smooth recovery and hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your trip.

Thank you for choosing Island Kayaking Adventure. We hope to paddle with you again in the future!

Bring bug spray. The only danger of wearing flip-flops is them perhaps falling in it. It's better to have water shoes or sandals that stay on your feet. The first part of the trip is through a very densely wooden area. That's why the bug spray is needed.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you so much for your 5 star review, Holly!
We’re glad you enjoyed the experience and appreciate you sharing those helpful tips. For our guests’ comfort, we provide a natural, DEET-free insect repellent before the tour, especially for the mangrove area at the beginning of the paddle.
We’re happy to hear you found it to be a great experience for couples and would love to welcome you back again!

Very crowded. Many kayaks taking off at the same time. The only way to see the bioluminescence is with a black tarp placed over you in the kayak. I would recommend going to Mosquito Bay instead.
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Jeanne.
We understand that the lagoon can feel busy at times, especially on high demand nights, as Laguna Grande is shared by multiple permitted outfitters. To ensure safety and a smooth experience, we add extra guides when higher traffic is expected to better support and manage our group.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that varies nightly, which is clearly explained in our tour description. Some evenings it appears as subtle sparkles, while other nights offer a brighter glow. When conditions are softer, a light-blocking tarp may be used to help guests better observe the natural effect.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective, and thank you for kayaking with us.

A lot of light pollution—bioluminescence is underwhelming but the workers are great. Call and find out if the algae is active before you go
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Hi Laurie,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, and its visibility can vary nightly depending on factors such as moon phase, recent weather, water conditions, and surrounding light. While we can never guarantee a specific brightness level, we always do our best to set clear expectations before the tour.
We truly appreciate your kind words about our team. Our guides work hard to ensure guests feel safe, supported, and well taken care of throughout the experience. We’re glad that part of the tour stood out positively for you.
Thank you again for your feedback. It helps us continue improving and educating visitors about this unique and delicate ecosystem.
