When to visit

Costa Rica boasts a number of microclimates. For example, in January, you’ll typically experience dry to very dry conditions in the Central Pacific area, but across the country on the Caribbean side, it can be very wet. Overall, the most popular time to visit is during the dry season, from December to April, especially around the holiday season. It’s the best time for outdoor activities. Keep in mind that September and October are the rainiest months in this zone.

Getting around

If you plan to explore different parts of the region, consider renting a 4-wheel drive for convenience and flexibility. While major highways are paved, some roads off the beaten path can be tricky to navigate and are especially bumpy at the end of the dry season. The regional buses are the cheapest option for getting around but also the slowest. Shuttle buses to popular tourist destinations are faster and more comfortable, and they will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel.

Traveler tips

Costa Ricans consider the biggest meal of the day to be lunch. Head to a soda (a small, locally owned café) or a local market for the most authentic cuisine during your stay. In restaurants and hotels, a 13 percent value added tax and a 10 percent tip are included in the price; you can also leave gratuity if you want.
