Perched on a mountaintop overlooking one of Bulgaria’s oldest towns, Tsarevets Fortress is—both geographically and statistically—the top attraction of Veliko Târnovo. Dating back to the 12th century, the imposing fortress is known for its medieval architecture and royal legacy.

A 17th-century merchant’s home turned museum, the Konstantsalieva House is one of the largest and most beautifully decorated houses in the village of Arbanasi, a historic trading town outside Veliko Tarnovo. Its austere and fortress-like defensive exterior conceals spacious rooms with bright fabrics and Bulgarian Revival furniture. There’s a souvenir shop on the ground floor.
