Aim to visit Peyto Lake between May and October. The snow on the path to the viewing point usually melts in late spring, but you still may encounter snowy conditions high up in the mountains. The hiking conditions are much more ideal in the summer,and the lake turns a beautiful blue color from glacial runoff this time of year.

The trail around Peyto Lake is just around 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers), and it’s considered an easy, 30-minute walk. The elevation isn’t high—just around 260 feet (80 meters)—so altitude shouldn’t be a problem. The effort may be low, but the rewards are high: The views from from the Peyto Lake Overlook are truly spectacular.

Q: Can you swim at Peyto Lake?

Yes, you can swin in Peyto Lake, but be prepared for chilly glacial water year-round. The lake freezes in the winter, of course; so if you want to dip your toes (or more) in, aim for the spring or summer months.

Yes, Peyto Lake and its vibrant blue waters are worth a visit. It’s an easy stop-off for the 30-minute walk to the viewpoint and back—you can easily add the hike to any Banff itinerary. It’s wheelchair and stroller accessible as well, and you can bring your dog if they are on a leash.

important information

the tour itself was EXCELLENT and tess was a wonderful tour guide. but if you book this, contact radventures directly to order lunch and rent equipment like snowshoes and skates. you cannot do these things through viator and you cannot do them after you've left. but there's no place on the tour to get lunch. either bring your own or order directly through the tour company.

Excellent tour of the lakes and beauty spots. Robbie was really friendly and had so much local knowledge to share. The group was small so we could ask questions and take the time we wanted in each stop.

The excursion is great, our guide he was wonderful. The lake had plenty of bubbles and was nicely frozen over. All the stops were beautiful. My only complaint is it literally says in the viator page contact RAD for ice skate rentals. I literally did several days before and was met with a, oh you booked with viator we can’t rent you skates but if you cancel with viator and rebook with us you can then rent skates. So basically was being told cancel, rebook so we don’t have to pay Viator anything and then we’ll let you rent skates. Seemed like shady way for them to avoid paying Viator a booking fee, if you don’t honor what it says on Viator don’t be on here on the first place. I kept my Viator booking and simply walked on the lake. We considered renting in town and brining them ourselves but opted just to walk on the lake. Again let this take nothing away from the tour and the guide but the office is trying to avoid viator bookings.

Peyto Lake is a must for first-time visitors to the Icefields Parkway and Canada’s Rocky Mountain parks.
It’s about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the lookout point.
There is a washroom facility near the parking lot.
There is a drop-off point closer to the viewing platform (via a short, level path). Follow the signs for tour buses and limited mobility access.
