Things to do in  Essaouira

Views to sweep you away

Whipped by Atlantic winds, the sandy beaches of Essaouira are among the best destinations for kitesurfing and windsurfing in all of Africa. Windswept coastal walks and water sports aren’t the only things to do in Essaouira, though. The Moroccan town is also brimming with art galleries, traditional handicraft workshops, Gnaoua music venues, and seafood restaurants. Explore the 18th-century Medina of Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; climb the seafront ramparts, where Game of Thrones scenes were famously filmed; then take a sunset camel ride along Essaouira Beach.

When to visit

It’s windy year-round in Essaouira, but the best conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing are from April through November. Both locals and travelers descend on Essaouira in the summer months of July and August, when the coastal breeze affords welcome relief from the humidity of Marrakech and other inland cities. To avoid the summer crowds, visit in spring (April–June) or fall (September–November) instead. Each June, the Gnaoua World Music Festival is an unforgettable experience, attracting an international audience.

Getting around

Essaouira is small enough to explore on foot, and wandering the mazelike streets and souks of the car-free medina is all part of its charm. The beach, port, and seafront ramparts can all be reached on foot, but to explore farther along the coast, hop in a traditional caleche (horse-drawn carriage), rent an all-terrain vehicle, or take a camel ride. For airport transfers and day trips, it’s easy to find a taxi or hire a private driver.

Traveler tips

Orson Welles, Jimi Hendrix, and Cat Stevens put artsy Essaouira on the map for travelers in the 20th century, and the seaside town remains a creative hub today. As such, it’s a great spot to purchase local art and handicrafts as well as indulge your own artistry. Tour an argan oil plantation to learn about traditional Moroccan cosmetics, take a carpet-weaving or jewelry-making workshop, or taste the myriad spices of local cuisine during a cooking class.

Q:Which Game of Thrones scenes were filmed in Essaouira?

Game of Thrones fans may recognize Essaouira’s medina and Skala de la Ville with its 18th-century ramparts and bastion from season 3 of the award-winning TV series. Key scenes include Daenerys walking through the slave city of Astapor, meeting the Unsullied, and commanding Drogon to attack and free the army.

Q:What should I do in Essaouira for a week?

With a whole week in Essaouira, there’s time to relax and enjoy the coastal town as well as explore farther afield. Visit the UNESCO–listed medina and ramparts, take some kitesurfing classes, join a handicrafts workshop, and enjoy day trips to Diabat village and the Ida Ougourd Wednesday market.

Q:Is Essaouira better than Marrakech?
A:

It depends! Essaouira and Marrakech offer two completely different experiences. Marrakech is a big, bustling city with magnificent architecture, sprawling souks, and lots of restaurants, bars, and things to do. Essaouira is a laid-back beach town where you’ll find local artists, fishermen, and water sports enthusiasts.

Q:Is Essaouira always windy?
A:

Yes! Essaouira’s nickname is the “Windy City of Africa” and it’s famous for its kitesurfing and windsurfing opportunities, especially from April through November. The coastal winds mean that summer temperatures are much cooler than inland, but make the beach better suited to water sports than swimming and sunbathing.

Q:Which is nicer: Agadir or Essaouira?
A:

It depends! Morocco’s most popular beach towns each offer a different experience. Agadir’s modern resorts and lively nightlife draw package tourists and sunseekers, and the beach is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Essaouira offers a more local, traditional vibe with its old medina, windy beach, and many art galleries.
