3 Days in Zadar for Families

Curated by Jenna Scatenawho loves spending summers in Zadar.

While you might associate the Dalmatian coast with an Ibiza-esque atmosphere in summer and beaches filled with romantic couples, Zadar can easily be enjoyed by the whole family. The more laidback city on the Croatian coast is an ideal place to entertain the kids, with old Roman ruins, the vibrant waterfront, nearby beaches and day trips to islands. With some local knowledge, you’ll be able to see the best of the city without a hint of boredom. This three-day itinerary will have all ages enjoying the stunning coastal city, so find out how I recommend you spend your time.

If you only have time for one thing, make it St. Anastasia's Cathedral.

Zadar's climate ranges from warm to mild: pack plenty of light clothes.

Day 1

On day one, get out and active with a trip to Kornati National Park. There's plenty to keep kids occupied, while adults can enjoy the views of pristine Adriatic waters. Spend a relaxing, family-friendly day on board a boat, getting to know the Croatian coastline. Dotted with hundreds of islands, take the chance to swim or snorkel. There are stops for breakfast, lunch and to take advantage of the nearby beaches.

On your return to the city, join a walking tour to learn about local heritage and architecture like St. Anastasia's Cathedral, the Church of St. Donat and Five Wells Square, accompanied by an expert guide.

Day 2

On day two, plan for a fun-filled adventure that begins at the village of Kaštel Žegarski. The stunning landscape scenery of the Zrmanja river and its Krupa tributary make for a majestic backdrop. Experience the thrill of a rafting adventure down the Zrmanja river, making memories to last with your family. Have lunch in Zrmanja before returning to Zadar.

If rafting isn't your thing, but adventure is, take a quad bike tour against views of the entire Zadar archipelago and the Zadar hinterland. Drive over the mountain trail Majstorska Cesta, and see river Zrmanja from the canyon viewpoint. Then, arrive back and visit must-see landmarks in the city, like the Greeting to the Sun and nearby Sea Organ, and enjoy dinner in the Old Town.

Day 3

On your final day in Zadar, hit the water. Leave from the city on a speedboat, and tour beautiful Sakarun beach on Dugi otok. Snorkel over a shipwreck at Lagnici island, and visit Veli Rat lighthouse before arriving at Sakarun.

Alternatively, take the kids to see the beautiful Krka Waterfalls, a national park area where you'll also find lakes and nature trails. You can swim in the pristine water of the lakes, have lunch at the park and take photos of the incredible scenery.
