3 Days in Brisbane for First Timers

Curated by Rachel Wegnerwho spent five months in Brisbane on a semester abroad.

Arriving from the US to Brisbane for my semester there in college, I was immediately taken with its infectiously friendly energy, and I only came to appreciate it more as time went on. Brisbane has a charm all its own thanks to its blend of classic metropolitan living and nature, anchored around the vibrant Brisbane River.

With three days to spend in Brisbane, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the city’s multifaceted lifestyle and history, as well as what the wider Brisbane region has to offer (read: mountains, beaches, and wildlife galore). So, if it’s your first time in the Queensland capital, here’s how to make the most of three days in Brisbane.

If you only have time for one thing, make it climbing to the lookout point of the Story Bridge for the best view of the Brisbane River.

Weather in Brisbane is fairly pleasant year-round, but summers can be hot and humid. Pack light and remember your sun protection.

Day 1

A sightseeing tour on the Brisbane River is a quintessential way to get your bearings. Several of the city’s major landmarks are clustered around the riverbank, so you’ll see the modern skyscrapers and historical architecture of the Central Business District (CBD) and the heritage-listed Story Bridge.

In the afternoon, take advantage of Brisbane’s pedestrian-friendly walkways to explore more of the city on a walking tour. Soak up the sun in the City Botanic Gardens and stroll around King George Square as you get a closer look at the River City.

Day 3

End your Brisbane visit by exploring one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods: South Bank. Across the Brisbane River from the CBD, South Bank houses some of the city’s best museums. Discover local art at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) or the Brisbane area’s natural history at the Queensland Museum Kurlipa—admission to both is free.

As the sun sets, get in touch with your adventurous side by climbing atop the Story Bridge. Enjoy your final glimpses of the city from a truly unique perspective—approximately 260 feet (80 meters) above the ground from one of Brisbane’s central landmarks.
