Top Surat Thani How to Get Around in 2026 - page 2

There is a version of Cheow Lan Lake most visitors never see, because it happens before breakfast. The mist is still on the water, the cliffs are shapes before they are colours, and the only engine out there is yours. Most sunrise views of this lake come from sleeping in a floating bungalow. This one runs as its own two hour departure from the Cheowlan side, so you sleep on land and still get the light. You go out to the Three Brothers, the three limestone peaks that stand together like an arrangement, while the light is still arriving and nothing else is moving on the water. Then a stop at a raft house to feed the fish, a small and slightly ridiculous pleasure that people remember. By 08:30 you are back at the pier, in time for breakfast, with the day untouched. It is early, it is dark, and it will be cool on the water before the sun is properly up. Bring a light layer. Coffee happens after, not before.

When the Ratchaprapha Dam filled in the 1980s, 385 families were moved out of the valley and given land on higher ground to rebuild on. They became the lake's boat drivers, its guides, its resort owners. This afternoon is spent in that village - not observing it, but eating in it, floating through it, and walking into the forest behind it. Lunch comes first: southern Thai dishes laid out on banana leaves at a long table beside the river. Then the water - not the famous lake, but the small green channels behind the houses, poled along on a bamboo raft at the only speed that lets you see any of it. Behind the village is a forest the villagers call Turtle: trees whose size stops the conversation, the herbs the village still collects for medicine and cooking, and a cave that stays cool however hot the day is. A short drive up, and the whole story is in front of you at once: the dam, the village the dam created, and the sun going down over both. Back at the hotel by 18:30. Max 15 guests.

Somewhere in the first twenty minutes the engine is loud, and then it isn't. That is usually when people go quiet too - when the lake opens and the water turns a green that does not look real until you are on it. You spend the whole day on Cheow Lan Lake in a wooden longtail boat driven by a villager who grew up on this water. First the Three Brothers, three limestone peaks standing together so deliberately it looks arranged. Then a cave: the temperature drops as you step inside, and the rock around you catches the light like scattered diamond. Lunch is on a bamboo raft house floating on the lake. Afterwards, swim, take a kayak out, or do nothing on the deck for a couple of hours. In the afternoon the boat takes you to a forest hidden inside the lake, with a waterfall standing at its entrance like a doorway. The raft-house food is simple, honest, cook-to-live food. Stops can shift with weather and water level; everything listed happens. Small shared group, never more than 15 guests.

This is the day for people who want to be tired at the end of it. Khao Sok's rainforest is one of the oldest on Earth, and the point of this day is the walk itself: distance, heat, roots, river crossings, and a destination you can only reach on foot. Your guide grew up on these trails, so you are not following a path - you are being shown a place. The river is with you most of the way, and there are waterfalls along it. Wild elephants and monkeys live in this forest; whether you see them is luck. Three kilometres in, there is a hut standing in the forest beside a waterfall. Lunch is made there, over fire, in lengths of bamboo. It is trekker food: simple, made with what is out there. Eating it beside a waterfall three kilometres from the nearest road is the point. Then you walk back out, and the day ends with tubing on the Sok River - floating at whatever speed the water decides, canopy sliding past overhead. The laziest ending to the most demanding day we run, by design. Max 15.
