With a cool climate more reminiscent of England than Malaysia, the Cameron Highlands provide a welcome break from the humidity of Kuala Lumpur. Located 124 miles (200 kilometers) from the capital, the lush landscape offers tea plantations, strawberry farms, flower-filled gardens, and highlights such as the eerie Mossy Forest and afternoon tea in the hill station.

Perched at the summit of the Genting Highlands, almost 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) above sea level, the Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park is a leisure and amusement resort in a unique Malaysian setting. Here, amusements, attractions, and rides get a fun twist. Each is designed around themes such as flying Zeppelins in the Robots Rivet Town or a roller coaster bike ride at Eagle Mountain.

This deer park and small zoo in Lanchang is home to deer from several different species, plus a wide range of birds and small animals. Travelers to this spot in central peninsular Malaysia can feed the deer potato slices, while there’s also a small petting zoo with guinea pigs and rabbits.

Meandering down to the golden sands of east coast Malaysia’s Cherating Beach, the Cherating River draws travelers with its rich coastal mangrove ecosystems, home to wildlife including crabs, lizards, snakes, and monkeys. The star attraction happens at night when the mangroves come alive with jewel-like streams of sparkling fireflies.

Nestled among the rolling green hills of the Cameron Highlands is BOH Tea Garden (BOH Tea Plantation), which encompasses a whopping 8,000 acres (3,250 hectares) of tea plantations and makes it the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia. Onsite, you’ll find a tea factory and processing plant, and a tea shop that boasts some of the region’s best vistas.

Located in Tanah Rata, part of the Cameron Highlands, Rose Valley lives up to its name with more than 450 types of roses. This hillside flower garden also boasts other plants in a terraced garden, along with sculptures, a pond, a café, a plant nursery, and a viewpoint overlooking the highlands.
